Everyone has their right to their own opinion of course! Whether it is Right/Wrong or just plain crazy?! lol
Two people here cant be trying to say that the Rare Polar Shifts of this Planet and the end of the Mayan Calendar coincide with each other can you?? Oh and didnt the Mayan calendar predict the world wide Computer crash several years ago?

Thanks for your replies!
I don't know much about the Mayan calender except that it looks cool and that apparently it ends in 2012. I don't believe it's going to be the end of the world, or even a time of great cataclysm. I expect people have searched for information to correlate with the prophecies and not surprisingly found it and packaged it all up into a convincing argument that all makes too much sense. I do think that we are already experience a time of massive change though, and the potential for cataclysm is very real. |

Well stated and a very good point you made! Yes it does seem like the world is rushing head long into some drastic changes?
But whether they are man made changes or natures changes we can only wait and see what happens? we never know what can happen. we had a mountain here in wash state that they said wouldnt erupt?! ooppss they were wrong!

There are several things i am worried about in the world today, mostly what -could- happen with new technologies that are being developed.
I'd like to think that these technologies will be used to benefit mankind, however, i'm not truly convinced that the people running the place have our best interests at heart. I believe that people can have insights into the future, but what they see is never set in stone. It's a bit like a warning a scientist gives...if we keep going the way we are going we could end up in the shit. What we can do is make improvements to the way we do things to improve our quality of life as well as reduce carbon emissions. I like breathing clean air, drinking clean water, and eating good food. Switching over to green technology and sustainable living practices is beneficial to us all, aside from those who make a lot of money out of current practices. |

The big problem is that everyone is making money out of the current practices. Everyone! Green technologies aren't being used because they cost more for the end consumer.
It has nothing to do with big business. They couldn't give a crap how much it costs, since their profit margins will remain the same - the greater costs will just be passed down on the consumers.

I'd say in the EU that little or no consideration has been given to cost, either in terms of the extra burden to be placed on an already struggling consumer, or the possible environmental impact, when forming "renewable" energy policy.
Sure, it'd be great to have a pollution free world whatever each individuals stance on Climate Change is. The fact is, renewable technologies such as wind and wave farms haven't been thought through. Do we really know what is going to happen when we start ripping up so far unspoilt, virgin habitats? Farmland that has developed its own habitat over centuries and managed by people who know what they're doing. Estuary and moorland habitats that are only now being allowed to recover from centuries of industrialisation. Because that is where these new technologies will be built. Not in our back yards. And the cost to the consumer? You can be certain it will be much more than the figures that energy generators are giving us now. It would be much more farsighted to enable communities and households to generate their own electricity in already built environments, and to break the monopolies of the energy and oil companies once and for all. Because remember folks, those energy and oil companies are up for grabs to any government that wants to seize upon their revenues for their own. And with the growing power and centralisation of The EU that is becoming almost inevitable.

Too true FR...
I can think of a couple of reasons to be cynical about renewable energy, culled from the human races long history. Firstly, it will cost double what it is estimated to cost because, secondary, it will only be half as efficient as the experts and policians hope....

eventually we are going to have to use renewable energy, since fossil fuels are finite and running out. In Australia, all we need do is put solar panels on everybody's roof, add a wind turbine or two even. It wouldn't be very hard to wipe out oil powered cars either.
farming here isn't done particularly well, our topsoil is becoming more and more degraded, and the major river system has been completely fucked up. The key thing to me is sustainability. It's going to cost more in the long run if we carry on with business as usual instead of doing what we can to create long term solutions. Only after the last tree has been cut down Only after the last fish has been caught Only after the last river has been poisoned Only then will you find money cannot be eaten -Cree Prophecy Last edited by skinhead2012; 11-14-2009 at 02:07 AM. |
