Rapidshare to be sued?
Thought i would point out the below on wikipedia.
If you access the link and scroll down to "issues". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RapidShare If they do face copyright suits it could have implications for the site Last edited by clan_hunter; 12-17-2007 at 05:02 PM. |

Interesting. Thanks for the post.
The copyright police are certainly cracking down on any kind of file sharing services. First it was Napster, then WinMX, and now RS?

Since they're not culpable, any lawsuit of 'copyright infringement' is specious and will get thrown out of court. They DO ban files that have received official complaints, so they're following the rules to the best of their ability. They are no more responsible for the content of uploads than your ISP is for the content of your e-mails. It's already been hashed out in courts to death. Either they check EVERY upload and veto any objectionable ones, or they need only delete files with legit complaints from the owners. That's legal and reasonable, and is the foundation of digital privacy laws. Since a lot of the uploads are now password encrypted, they can't be expected to employ the NSA to break every protected file, and they're not at fault.

I remember getting a good laugh when I found out that RS does not allow porn.
Does anyone really save anything else on RS?

Personally, I tend to steer away from RS and from file hosting sites in general. It's simpler to just host it myself.
But, before I had the ability to do that, I used RS quite a bit for non-porn stuff and I've seen a lot of other people doing so as well. |

Shelling out $34 every 6 months? is still a lot cheaper than a dedicated server.

Yeah, paying for a server, just so you could host some files online would be pretty stupid.
BUT, if you already have a server anyway, then it's cheaper to just tack some stuff on there. |

That is from January 2007, old news by now. Even the press release on the GEMA website has been removed - still available via Google's Cache though.

True the news is dated but as we know with Law Suits they take ages to get to court as well, napster is a prime example, just pointing out that in future we may have to find a alternative site to host our files when this eventually comes to head which it will some day. It's sure to happen, I'm surprised they've lasted this long.

Well, as much as I hate to say this. *Grits teeth*
Ntense summed it up rather well. RS is not doing anything illegal. If someone complains about a file, then RS will delete it. That's about all they can reasonably be expected to do. |

Glad someone got the joke! Maddog you are a gem!
I have actually started saving and sharing a fair bit of music on RS as many know all too well! I have tons of webspace to use too, but I prefer to use that for stuff I don't intend to share. Webspace is cheap, but bandwith is not, and sharing takes lots of bandwith! But still, I would hazard to guess that copyrighted materials makes up the majority of RS downloads. If a lawsuit was to succeed against RS that is all the prosecution would have to prove (at least in the US.) That was how they shut down Napster. Not sure how EU law differs.
