A lot of the time leadership contests aren't, and to be honest while in power I don't think its such a good idea, nothing worse for the country than the party in power, whether red or blue, ripping itself in public, especially with the damage to the reputation of the winner that is inevitable, a smooth handover it always best. Though maybe there is a case to be made for a compulsory election within say six months to confirm the change, six months gives the new one plenty of time to show any non-aligned voters whether or not to support with them, while be near enough to not have a lame duck in charge for too long.
BTW Thatcher and Blair can be removed from contention here, I just put them in as a bored joke.
And Hitler being an elected dictator, that is just something that fascinates me, the whole idea that he probably had one of the biggest 'mandates' to use modern parlance, that a government has ever had, certainly as I said, as large if not larger than a lot of post war British PM's.
