Some random and scrambled thoughts regarding prejudice…

Lest we forget that more people have been stupidly murdered in the name of God than for any other reason. I saw Savior (1998) with Dennis Quaid years ago and that very thought provoking movie helped me form some long lasting values and attitudes regarding the conduct of an an all too short life.

A few years ago, I was sitting in an Irish pub bragging about Texas and the subject of religion came up. Actually, I may have started it with my questions regarding a common people divided and killing each other over religious differences. The subject still confounds me. How can you distinguish a Catholic Irishman from a Protestant Irishman? How do they know who to kill? The same holds true in Bosnia and a multitude of other countries. A really ancient Irish pub regular (he was about my current age) started going on and on about Mormons. He said that he let two missionaries into his home and they just sat there as if dumbfounded. He asked what was next and they said that they really didn’t know. It seems that they had never gotten that far before. The pub discussion was disrupted by laughter for several minutes.

The doctor that brought my son into this world was a former next door neighbor and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and he was indeed a Mormon. I baby sat his children while his second, third and fifth children were born. I have never met a better or more refined human being in my life. I have hired several Mormons in my endeavors to continue to keep several companies alive and well. I’m not Howard Hughes, but I honestly believe that I have never made better decisions in my entire career.

Decades ago, one of my very best clients asked me to go dove hunting with him. He was quite elderly and had also asked his doctor to accompany us. We went to his 1,100 acre ranch and I harvested many birds. While we were sitting around a camp site eating Kuby’s Sausages, he told us of his childhood. He was an Armenian. In his youth, the Turks had driven his village inhabitants into the mountains due to religious prejudice. As a child, he was forced to eat human flesh in order to survive. His mother, father and all of his siblings didn’t survive. When he finally made his escape, he somehow managed to get to Texas. He met a young Mormon lady, fell in love and eventually became a Mormon. The doctor, to whom he introduced me, became my closest friend and most trusted advisor. We hunted together for almost thirty years.

Last Saturday, I went hog hunting with a neighbor. His name is Leonard Epstein. We haven’t discussed religion, but I seriously doubt that he is a Mormon. But, he is a great fellow and has some super cute and very polite kids. He will be even better after I teach him how to shoot a hog or even a slow moving rogue elephant.

One of my closet associates was sponsored by my company 35 years ago. It seems that he was born in Palestine as a Suni Moslem. The Israeli's had him squarely in their sights. His uncle made an appeal and we responded. He is one of my closest friends. He married the daughter of a Syrian general and she now has an inoperable brain tumor. He and I talk almost every evening. Bad things shouldn't happen to good people.

In closing, a Mormon named John Moses Browning kept my ass alive on several occasions with his very competent designs.

Prejudice, whether it be racial, political or religious is detrimental to mankind and should be squelched as soon as its ugly head appears from beneath the cracks of hell.

I believe that it is human nature for the majority of humanity to feel inferior and uncertain about themselves or their beliefs to some degree. I further believe that it is also human nature to make an effort to deflect and minimize their self perceived flaws by exaggerating and fictionalizing the perceived flaws of others. In other words, I might be screwed up, but just look at those Mormons, redheads, Poles, Bohemians, Jews, blacks, blondes or whatever is handy at the time.

Such is the unfortunate nature of man. Until the logical and enlightened dig in their heels and become determined to confront and no longer allow this behavior, it will continue until Armageddon.

Myths and misinformation abound regarding every religion and are continually spread by seemingly intelligent and often believable sources.

It was not my intent to defend any religion. It was my intent to point out the prejudice that has been and continues to make this an unsafe world.

It is your right to disagree with any religion and people within your own religion or belief system regarding dogma, principles and the truth as you see it. However, the condemnation of any religion or belief system can only serve to sow the seeds of hatred that eventually lead to yet another holocaust or another 9-11.

While I was in the afore mentioned Irish pub, a young man in his twenties informed us that his priest had warned his congregation not to allow Mormon missionaries into their homes. It seems that the Mormons had constructed a secret tunnel and their plan was to kidnap women and children and take them to Hawaii. The frightening thing about it was that not everyone laughed, including the young man.

A few years ago, I visited Tulum in Mexico. It was a retreat for Mayan priests. There is a huge carved stone altar that had been partially defaced by the axes of the Spaniards. It clearly depicts a puff of smoke, a long faced bearded man and what appeared to another long faced man. A Mexican archeology student was a paid guide and when asked what the carving depicted, he said that it was a very common pictograph that represented God the father, God the son and God the spirit. It was thousand years old. Additionally, the Book of Mormon has been as a guide book for archeologists to locate lost South American cities. Unfortunately, due to the climate, the Mayans recorded their history on thin sheets of gold which were melted into ingots and sent to Spain or the bottom of hurricane alley.

Up until just a decade or so ago, I was aware of very few religions that didn’t openly bear prejudice against homosexuals. Many still do. Women still suffer from some degree of discrimination in a majority of the world’s religions.

As far as the underwear thing, I haven’t seen any, but I’m told that they are quite comfortable and allow for greater freedom of movement and a significantly higher sperm count as opposed to briefs.

In closing, I do not agree with the Mormons. Everyone knows that the Garden of Eden is in Texas.

For the record, I am a Roman Catholic.

Personnally I think all religions are made up of the same types of members

Those that want you to beleif the same as them and will do all they can to convert you.

And those that, while they want you to beleive the same as them, are just as content to use their beliefs to comfort themselves. help you if possible. accept you for who you are and let you find you own path to God.

I believe that this subject is being covered in a rather civilized manner (by Rowdy Room standards) and I sense very little real animosity.

Ignored prejudice doesn't go away. It festers like a rancid sore on the flesh of humanity. It must be confronted and every effort must be made to make the flesh whole and healthy.

To ignore it makes you culpable in the inevitable results.

The Mormon missionaries were harshly rejected by the lady of the house who slammed the door in their faces. To her consternation, the door did not close completely but swung back towards her.

"Get your foot out of my door!" she shouted angrily.

"But, madam ... " the senior companion began, but she didn't listen and she slammed the door even harder. It swung back towards her again.

Furiously, she screamed "Get your Mormon foot out of my door!"

"But, madam .... " he began again.

"Don't but madam, me!" she screamed, going purple with hatred, and slamming the door again, this time with both hands, only to see it swing back at her a third time.

"Aaaaaargggghhhhhhhh!" she screamed hysterically.

The junior companion stepped forward and said softly through the door opening, "Madam, you will be able to shut the door if you first remove your cat!"

That’s just what was needed. Now, there will those that will forever claim irrefutable proof that the Mormons are killing cats. And, it’s just a short leap to rumors that they are promoting rat infestation in an effort to revive the black plague in order to promote their church.
