Ironic really, in a post 9/11 world, that US cash went to buy arms to kill Brit soldiers and civilians. Mind you, what President had the balls to take on the Irish American voters...

If allowing political fronts of terrorist organisations to raise funds is "freedom" that is a pretty twisted concept. And that fund raising didn't stop at some kindly priest shaking a tin in Boston drinking holes, arms smuggling, drugs, racketeering, that is where the money came from. And promptly got sent to Libya! Fucking hilarious that you lot are getting your knickers in a twist over Al-Megrahi being released, just because oil, your latest arch enemy, may have had something to do with it.

It's also a bit ironic that the US fell over itself to arm the freedom loving Mujahadeen when they were fighting the Russians. You know - the Godless communist Russians. The US military poured fucking millions into the Taliban coffers as well as arms and supplies.
Now the same Taliban who were once glorious freedom fighters and trained by the CIA, are the scum of the earth with the US dedicated to wiping them out. Same in Iraq. The US hugely supported Saddam Hussein and sold him squillions of planes, tanks etc etc etc. US Politicians queued up to shake his hand. Then all of a sudden he was public enemy no.1. Isn't it funny how the enemy is always where the oil supplies or oil lines are threatened?

I am pro -Palestinian and quite fond of the social welfare aspects of Hamas- they are not JUST terrorists. They provide social welfare and education and hosts of other programs. They are Isreal without a state. Isreal is guilty of terrorism. What should we do with all the Zionist orgs here? 2. if knickers are not worn, can they be twisted? 3. Governments are entitled to govern according to their own rules and policies- Scotland has longstanding policy of compassionate release for terminally ill prisoners no matter the severity of the crime- wholly based on compassionate release. BP has NOTHING to do with crime or compassion. Does BP seem like a possible lobbyist- maybe, depends on what you want to believe. but lobbying is not against the law and is a huge industry. I hold Justices in high regard because their life is dedicated to interpreting law- not being pandering politicos. And as both a UK and US citizen- I believe that we are governed by our conscience not oil. Everything seems neatly blamed on our need for oil. The Bush Jr. administration was just a revenge fuck for Bush Sr. Iraq-Kuwait.

The Taliban is a little different story. Yes the CIA poured millions into the hands of the Afghans during the Russian occupation. Was that wise policy? Debatable, but in the context of the cold war it was justified. The Soviets were our sworn enemy. Does no one remember Comrade Nikita pounding on the podium in front of the Politburo promising the bury the United States? I sure do. What was without a doubt bad policy was abandoning the Afghans to their own devices after the Soviets had been driven out. In my mind that is the single biggest foreign policy mistake the US has made since the end of WWII. That decision, along with the unresolved Arab-Israeli conflict was lead the West where it finds itself today. You may ask why I say the West rather than the US. I'll tell you, it's because the true, hardcore Islamist see little difference between Europe, especially Western Europe, and the United States. European powers were meddling in their affairs long before the US ever thought to. Hell, European powers (ie. Britian and France) were meddling in their affairs long before the US was even a nation. For nearly 1000 years Europeans have been stomping all over the Middle East doing as the damn well pleased. Deposing local governments, installing dictators, redrawing boundries, creating entire countries. Before casting stones, some of you may want to look at your own national histories because non of us are without blame here.

US: Irish dude George Harrison got fucked by the FBI, increasingly proficient at disrupting IRA arms procurement activities by Irish paramilitaries in the USA. Libya: In 1990s Libya's Colonel Ghadaffi decided to give no further aid to the IRA and and gave all intelligence to UK authorities, and in turn Irish Republic. IRA procurement and supply of weaponry closed off- end game.

um- wrong- to increase violence and attacks- IRA were seeking rocket launchers and bombs. With sources dried up, during the ceasefire, IRA did not resist the decommission of their weapons. IRA realized the difficulties of procuring and importing new stocks of weaponry.

Karen. I have very little argument with what you have to say, except for this concept of "freedom". We all know the very idea as it's bandied about by certain politicians is a complete joke. We are only free to live under the rules of whatever government holds sway over us at the time.
My real problem with what your saying is not with freedom of speech, I have a very strong belief in that. But their is a big difference between espousing a religious or political belief, however hateful, and providing people with the means to carry out hate crimes and terrorism. Allowing these people to operate under a seemingly benevolent political structure is not freedom, it's daft political correctness. Now I understand the importance of legal processes, and that they should be able to operate independantly of overt political influence. But any group encouraging hatred, intolerance, terror etc should be kept under very close scrutiny to ensure that they're doing nothing more than talking about it.

Everyone is right. I enjoyed reading the replies.
I would like to point out that I am not against Americans per se. Only their fuckwit politicians and the dangerously incompetent military. I have met many Americans (I nearly married one!) and as a race are the most hospitable, friendly and patriotic of any nation. However, in many areas of the world American foreign policy is likened to that of a big schoolboy bully with plenty of pocket money either picking on the smaller kids in the playground or trying to bribe the others. And wondering why nobody likes him! As they said about the Yanks in England during the war: They're overfed, overpaid, oversexed and over here. I for one am glad they were - even if they did come in late.

As Lil-Mac has pointed out, England was just as bad back in the day. So were the Dutch in Africa, the Spanish in South America, Germany and Japan in WWII and Russia right after. And let us not forget the Romans, the Persians, the Mongols and the Chinese, at least as far as Tibet goes. Funny how people forget these things. And the only reason the aforementioned aren't still a bunch of world-wide assholes (except for China) is because they can't afford it anymore. So let's cast stones shall we? It's always whatever country has the most power at any given time. When someday some country supersedes the U.S. as the most powerful, they will no doubt eventually be viewed the same way as the U.S. is now. And while you might think so, what a government does abroad is rarely if ever representative of the will of the people of that country. Most people I know think it's total bullshit that we invaded Iraq. They were no threat to us and we know it. But maybe the world thinks we wanted that. Not! In my view politicians suck. Period. No matter what country they are from. The only difference is how much money they have to use to their advantage. But thanks for not being against Americans, per se.
