Paranoid?
An old and trusted friend sent me a p.m. the other day accusing me of being paranoid about revealing my postal address and after some reflection I had to agree with him - but was I justified?
How many of you on this forum tell anyone any of your personal details? We all have avatars, not photos, and we all have names that obviously aren't our own - batffink, Phantom, StainlessSteelRat etc. but do we reveal anything else and is it wise to do so? I for one don't want anyone to know that I have a penchant for all things to do with rape even though I would not even think of actually carrying it out (even if I could) Am I paranoid or just being circumspect? Are we being TOO careful. What are your thoughts?

WOW?? Feeling pretty good this week Bat? Lot of good posts to respond to as well!
Some levels keep us safe too much personal info can be obtained to damn easily now adays. Either gotten by hackers or private stuff released by accident by Banks or Credit Card people...Accident?? Keeping things to ourselves does keep us safe as well as out of Jail or prision too. Who the hell knows what that person you "trusted" will do with that info and could even unknowingly let it slip to the wrong people. And they can do you severe wrong either money wise or physcily! Fear keeps us safe but we cant let it consume us either.

It's an interesting question. For me it is somewhat of a dichotomy and depends on where I am.
On here I am someone closed though I have shared a real picture of myself with a member or two. I have a gmail address that anyone can write to if they want. In emails or messages I'll share other things as well. But they are not enough really to track me down or get me in trouble. Perhaps if the right female came along that would change but up to know it has not. The other part of me is very open. People that know me can track me all the way back to the Usenet days. The public part of me is very open and I share many details about my life. I used to blog daily as well and shared many parts of my life with anyone. I'm very active on Facebook as well. Out there I am very much an open book to the point that if you knew just a thing or two about the internet you'd have my phone and address within a few minutes. I'm aware of that and that is the first step in being prepared for anything that might come down. Not sure if that makes sense or not to you but it does to me. |
