May I ask you our question folks ? I'm dating a girl and we have this debate : she thinks people nod their heads to say "Yes" or "No" because it's a learned behavior, but I think it's an innate thing...

So who's right ?

Head nodding is a learned thing. In Bulgaria for example, if he's nodding his head up and down, he's not agreeing with you... The Turks do something similar, but not quite.

Charles Darwin looked into it and wrote up his findings in a book called The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals (1872). Like a lot of other things, common gestures are often learn behaviors.

Oh, while you're at it, don't go thumbing a ride in Greece or Sardinia in the traditional American way. There, extending the thumb like that means "screw you" or close enough to it.

There is an excellent paper on the subject published in the December 2006 edition of Communication Studies by Anna-Karin Magnusson titled “Nonverbal conversation-regulating signals of the blind adult”.

The gist of which is how blind people use non-verbal skills (head nodding, touching, gestures) when communicating with both the blind and the non-blind. It appears that in the course of the study it was found that the blind use fewer visual cues while communicating other visually impaired individuals.

One of the more interesting consideration broached by the paper is whether the blind person became so congenitally or adventitiously which would alter the experience base of the study subjects. The totality of blindness would also be a consideration and for her study, Magnusson selected only subjects that were totally unseeing and not those with merely a legal definition of blindness which could indicate some visual acuity remained. Some remaining visual acuity could be reflected in a person’s behavior.

It was also found that while the blind often use non-verbal skills, their usage is equally often inappropriate , where actions such as head nodding or hand gestures are not relevant in respect to the conversation, and absent when dealing with other blind people.

What you may have observed could be tainted by its paucity and you may wish to consider the history of those subjects whose behavior you have observed before assigning a behavioral standard to it. The observer effect, which has often been ascribed to Heisenberg, would of course have to be considered as well. To test it appropriately, you’d need to see if the actions follow cultural lines where head nodding doesn’t carry the same meaning and then examine what those subjects do when congenitally or adventitiously blind and compare your results.

I’ve seen no studies along those lines, but this one does offer some insight into the subject which you may not have considered. As for the behaviors being taught, why not? After all, blind people still have lights in their homes too, and they need them for what?

Hey Keith,

It would be cool if the pictures in this thread could only be seen by people with ,lets say,a 50 post count.Then you would know that people who viewed them would not be lurkers.I think you would see more people posting their pic.I know i would not care if Gaggirl ,Kitty,or Conrad saw my pic.

I must second the thought by Dark on the minimal post to view photo's of members.Having said that,there is always PM.As far as the Head nod question,I will say that I believe there is a combination of learned AND innate behavior in every human action.Environment as well as genetics play a part.Also, Charles Darwin,while many things he wrote are still valid,has since been shown to be incorrect on many,many things.Sadly few self respecting scientist will stand up and say "hey,my research does not support the original model."Many are also hesitant to question what has been accepted as fact despite many inconsistencys in research the years since Darwin (and others before him).Science is based on research to find answers for a given problem but many have bent the research to fit the Darwin models.....Sorry,for the rant.It just bugs me that so much true research is out there to contradict Darwin on many things but it's always Darwin this and Darwin that when it's so easy to find the problems with most of his theorys in any university or public library...Wow,someone stop me before I say something that might cause waves.LOL!!!!

Yeah Darkone, that is a mighty fine idea. What do the mods think of this idea? I know I personally think of RB as a community, so it would be nice to be able to know what other established members look like.

As for the higher post count to view pics idea.There used to be a hide links function(back in,The Days of the Rat)and i thought maybe we could use that so i PMed are local good guy sheriff with the idea(Somedude).He said the function had been disabled but maybe if we all ask nicely in Pms they could do something about it.

I have pm'd the mods to add my vote for the introduction of a postcount limit to view peoples personal pics. It'd be cool if other people could do the same, I bet loads more people would show themselves if it was only to other established members.
