Default Misused and overused

I always try to use English correctly and sympathise with other nationalities who struggle with the main rule of English ie: There are no rules.
However, I'm getting fed up to the back teeth with those five words that every lazy English speaking bastard seems to use these days.

Fantastic.
Icon.
Basically.
Awesome.
Absolutely.

For fuck's sake get it right!

"Fantastic" means not real, a fantasy and something imaginitive. Why don't they use words such as "Incredible', "Marvellous" and "Great" etc. instead?

Icon is a religious painting, not a name for some person or thing that is well known.

Why do some people start a sentence off with "Basically"? ie " "Basically I was just minding my own business"

Why is something out of the ordinary always described as "awesome" whether it evokes awe or not?

My pet hate. People saying "Absolutely" instead of a simple "Yes." Absolutely Fucking What?

OK. I've had my whinge for the week. There you go. Absolutely!

I shamefacedly admit that I do use "absolutely" to mean a vehement affirmative, but am not guilty of the others. As a former English teacher I tend to be very precise in my speech and writing. Others find this annoying but ... *shrug*

If you hear someone start a sentence with "Actually" or "Well, actually" you should prepare yourself for a lecture about a subject for which you only have passing interest.

An example would be, "Actually, an icon is an object of devotion or adoration. So while it applies to religious paintings it also applies to pop stars or other similar objects or people."

I think in 2010 the most overused word was epic. Thank god thats died down since then.

You talk like the English language is A) a static unchanging rule and B) words don't have both multiple meanings and common vernacular which doesn't always fit the dictionary definition but is still perfectly legitimate. Language changes. I knew a linguist that said that by the time a word is written down it is already out of date. Actually all the usages you complained about are legitimate current, or nearly current, usage of the words.

Fae has a perfectly valid point. Just that I'm a miserable old fuck that's set in his ways and was taught by qualified English teachers and not half educated, American clone, semi-literate morons.
It's not that I don't see change, it's that the average Australian and American vocabulary consists of about the same one hundred words.
Listen to the half educated pricks when they try to describe something out of the ordinary______ "Gee, that's fantastic" etc etc.
How many times a day do you hear something described as "fantastic"? Fucking dozens of times I bet.
That's my point Fae my dear.

Not really old fruit. Just trying to suck a few people in and get a thread going here. I think I half succeeded.

Another point I'd like to make if it's not boring too many people to death, is the non-recognition of singular and plural.

How many times do you hear such things as:

"There's heaps of bargains available." instead of "There are heaps of bargains available."

and

"There's ten left." instead of "There are ten left."

Pure fucking laziness!

Very interesting my Canadian friend, however, just because the OED says it's right doesn't mean it is. All it means is that these expressions have unfortunately passed into the English language because a generation of mindless drones now use them.
Stick with me kid and you'll wear diamonds.

Hey! I am part of that mindless generation of drones. I am almost offended.

I have to agree with Fae on this one though. Language is fluid and words change their meaning, you need to get with the times man - haha. Two words come to mind on this, Fag, and Gay. Both use to mean completely different things, and I think we all know what they mean now.

I have a bigger problem with using the infinitive of "be" and never conjugating it.

"I be this...", "he be that..."

Plus "axe" in place of "ask", "Libary" vs "library"
