Some words about trauma - Rape Board

An experience of sexual violence or abuse is almost always traumatic
to the victim. From the rapist's point of view this is a very good
thing. In addition to his sexual pleasure and feeling of power he
can do some permanent damage to his victim, and this way increase
the power of men in general. Every rapist who traumatizes his
victim, as almost all do, is making a huge favour to the male
society, because the more there are traumatized and fearful women
around, the more powerful all men get.

I did some studying on this subject, so in the following piece I'll
try to explain what in fact the consequences of rape are.

A violent situation is extremely frightening to the victim. Many of
them feel a strong fear of death at the moment even if the rapist
wasn't really threatening their lives. In addition it is a very
humiliating experience. Also the situation usually comes much
unexpected. Something the victim would have never thought would happen to her. In most of the cases the rapist is someone who the victim
knows: someone who she has trusted enough to create a relationship
with him. The rapist abuses this trust and betrays it, and this
betrayal can have a serious effect to the victim's ability to trust
other people.

In a traumatizing situation a woman experiences things different
from normal. The memories of the situation are not usually logic,
but an incoherent stream of voices, smells, feelings, pictures of
situations and thoughts. This leads to a situation in which the
experiences of rape start to live their on lives in the mind of the
victim, causing symptoms which the victim doesn't realize are caused
by the rape experience. She dissociates. For instance she might
remember what she saw during the rape, but not what she felt. Or she
might completely forget parts of the whole ordeal. In the best case
not only her memories will divide in two, but also her whole
personality will be split into separate sides, which are not
attached to each other and which feel differently about things. The
next step from there could be schizophrenia.

From the rapists point of view the most rewarding effect of sexual
violence is however the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Its
symptoms can be divided roughly in three different categories.

The first category consists of the so called re-experience symptoms.
The memories of the rape, or parts of it, invade the victim's mind
in surprising situations, and she can't control them with will-
power. The feelings she has experienced: fear, disgust,
helplessness, and the perceptions like smells, pictures and sounds
rush uncontrollably back into her mind. These symptoms occur
especially in situations that remind the victim of the rape
experience, or in situations in which the victim's mind is blank,
for instance when she tries to relax or go to sleep.

The second category of PTSD is the symptoms of evasion. To avoid the
painful memories, the victim evades the things that remind her of
what has happened, like thinking about the rape, talking about it,
or certain places and situations, for instance getting touched. The
victim can even evade all feelings and human relations in general.

The third category symptoms are called activity symptoms. They
include for instance insomnia, nightmares, sudden changes of mood,
concentration difficulties, startling and constant state of alert.
The victim's body is all the time looking out for danger and is
ready to react: to fight, escape or slacken.

Other typical consequences of sexual violence are for instance
depression and anxiety. Especially the ones who have experienced
abuse in their childhood are suffering from several other symptoms,
which are obviously related to the traumatic experience. These
symptoms are for instance eating disorders, self-destructivenes s and
various somatic symptoms, like gynaecologic illnesses and rash. The
victim might have liked her body before the attack, but afterwards
she feels that her body is dirty, unfamiliar and something she
should be ashamed of.

The most typical cosequence of sexual violence is however the
victim's inability to trust anyone. Because the act of rape has been
surprising, the victim may expect that anyone can in principle be a
potential aggressor. To avoid to be wounded again, the victim stays
away from close contacts to people and is incapable to trust anyone.
If the rapist has been someone she knew well, the situation is
especially difficult for her. She is unable to tell about the
incident to anyone, because that would make her liable to other
people's reactions, which are not always positive. The victim may
face evasion, suspicion and blaming. Her social network will most
probably divide in two: the other side believes her and the other
side believes the rapist's version. When we are dealing with child
abuse, a very usual situation is that the child's closest people
refuse to believe her story totally. This happens, because other
people don't want to think about such things and want to preserve
their old ideas of the world around them.

What the rapists most often find exciting, are the sexual
cosequences in the victim. Very often a sexually traumatized woman
will totally lose her ability and will to sexual contacts. She may
also begin to treat herself as an object, just like the rapist did.
In this case the victim may be driven to relationships, that will
hurt her even more. In cases of child abuse, the victim may totally
deny her sexuality, or her sexual identity may grow up to be
shapeless, at least emotionally distorted. She is unable to see who
she is as a sexual being, as well as what the nature of her sexual
will might be.

On the other hand, the victim may react totally differently. She may
try to use sexul behaviour to fix what has been broken. A raped,
young girl may be driven to numerous, superficial sex acts as she
subconsciously tries to prove herself that the rape hasn't been able
to destroy her sexuality. She tries to convince herself that she is
a sexually vivid and feeling person, which she in reality is not.
It has also happened, that the victim has voluntarily continued the
relationship with the violator. That happens out of pure fear. In
these situations the man has managed to subdue his victim and has
all power over her. So it is no wonder why many men use sexual
violence as a weapon to gain all the power they need.

Basically there is not a single area of life which couldn't be
damaged by rape. The deeper we go into the subject, the more obvious
it seems that sexual violence can destroy a woman's life totally. We
many not also forget that sexual violence very often makes the
victim face deep financial difficulties. They must take days off
from work because of hospital treatment, or in many cases, because
of total incapacity for work. Also she must pay all her medical and
hospital treatment out of her own pocket. If she is a student, her
studies will most probably be delayed and her grades will go down.
Drug abuse is a well known problem among rape victims. All in all,
sexual violence has a far reaching, negative effect on the victim's
possibilities to get herself a satisfactory economical livelihood
and safety. Very often the victim also feels that she has to move
her household to another location, because the old environment
brings up the painful memories in her. So she has to leave all the
good things behind her as well. Friends, relatives, hobbies,
pleasant memories; all gone.

44% of the rape victims have thought about suicide. 19% have tried
to attempt suicide. Suicidal thoughts, suicidal behaviour and
suicide attempts are even more comon among the group who has faced
sexual violence in childhood or at young age. Post traumatic stress
disorder puts the victim's organism in a constant state of stress
and extertion. This is known to have connections with outbreaking
physical illnesses and prolonged recovery.

We men can make many conclusions out of this. It really seems that
we do have a great power within our hands. Not only is raping very
satisfactory and enjoyable in sexual sense, but it is also a good
weapon to submit women to our will. It can be used to exploitation,
and as a weapon of blackmail or revenge it is extremely effective.
Also the fun it brings us can be long lasting. A smart rapist can
take pleasure out of his victim's agony for years, if he is able to
watch the slow destruction of her life. That way he can feel the
total power he has over his victims, and that feeling will most
probably give him hard erections again and again. Taking pleasure
out of all the destruction, pain and devastation he has caused will
lead him to the best and strongest orgasms he can possibly have.

Like the opposite of obsession and self-destruction. Like those who willingly Isolate themselves from all contact with society! Don't take this the wrong way please, this isn't meant to be an offense.
Since I'm quite familiar with that subject I appreciate the work and thought you put into it. I have to tell you however it's rather one-sided and shallow. This is basic information to be found any place rape is being discussed.
So don't get me wrong if I just want to point out there is much more to it.

I also want to make you see why some of "us women" might not exactly like it.
