That should not be necessary, actually. On KO we had some simple questions before registering that stymied the spambots but never kept anyone else out. Add that to a 5 PM limit per hour and the ability to ban whole blocks of Russia, China and Romania (which at the time were the worst offenders) and we had very little spam but the members were free to post away.

The spam issue is truly terrible at the moment. Hope you can get it sorted.

Maybe the spambots are also 'clicking' on the ads, therefore the site owners do not have the incentive to do much about them?

CR, I know, and appreciate, that all the Mods are doing the best they can, especially you and baur. I just wish the owner would realize that all this spam, and the annoyance it causes for all of us, hurts the forum far more than any of the minor inconveniences that have been proposed in this and other threads. Even worse than the annoyance is the fact that some of the links in the spam posts undoubtedly link to malicious websites where an unsophisticated user will end up with spambot software unknowingly installed on his computer, thereby adding to the spam problem. He's really shooting himself in the foot, not to mention all the other forums running on vBulletin! One of these days, someone might start up a competing forum with a more enlightened approach to spam control!

Exactly. The admin here does not care - and never has cared - about the community aspect of this forum. He/they just want to drive as much traffic and sell as much porn as they can. It's a numbers game.

For the record, I offered to buy the domain from him when the place crashed last time but never received the courtesy of a reply.

So really all there is for us is to keep posting. Back when I first joined here, up until the big crash, the spam was here. It wasn't as evident though, because of the sheer volume of legitimate posters, plus having more active moderators so the spam would disappear more quickly.

All we can do is make this board look like it isn't ruled by spammers, and hope that a broader global spread of people throw their names in the ring to get a chance at eliminating spam. I know, it's a slim chance. Finding good moderators for any forum is a difficult task.

A while back I posted a snarky reply to a spam post. I got a concerned PM from another member warning me that I could be banned for doing that. That can't be true, can it? Spammers can come in unmolested and unchallenged but a registered member can be cashiered for messing around with it? Tell me that's not true, please.

The only reaction you'll get for being snarky to a spammer is applause. I've been here for years and NOBODY has EVER been banned for being rude to a spammer. Back when the flood of spam was merely a trickle we had considerable fun insulting and explaining in great detail what should happen to all spammers.

A snarky reply to a real person isn't allowed except here in the Rowdy Room. I think most of us would agree with that, or at least accept it. Applying that rule to replies made to automated robots (virtually all of the forum spam) would make no sense. I think the mods would almost certainly take that approach, though I can't speak for them.

I had a message from a moderator recently, because I wrote the word "cunt" in response to a spam thread. The trouble with that is if you post in a spam thread, or quote a spammer in an established thread, you run the risk of accidentally getting caught up in the subsequent ISP block.

Regarding snarkyness, I don't think making a snarky reply to an idiotic post is going to get anyone banned, or even warned. A direct insult out side of the Rowdy Room will though. I think it's generally accepted for example that a "what would you do to my imaginary girlfriend" type post is going to generate some very sarcastic replies.

OMG... those posts are my pet hate, right under spammers. About once a year I respond and it's never pretty. I mean seriously...how sad does your life have to be?

I went over to VB recently and the whole effing discussion forum was one thread after another of sad, dickless losers posting to each other about how badass they are and how they would tear her up. Heh. If any of those women even looked at those keyboard heroes they wouldn't be able to find their balls for a week.
