Default effects of porn

Recently a guy i know was trying to convince me that watching porn is wrong etc etc and i also read a paper by this guy who was saying that it's is bad for society etc etc and it got me thinking about the assumptions people make about the effects of porn.

People talk about how it makes you view women as sex objects. When i was 5 years old, i remember there were 4 girls i used to fantasize about from school. The desire to procreate is an inbuilt function of our existence to make us reproduce and continue existing, so naturally a man see's a woman as something to impregnate.

I haven't noticed any effect on the way i view women after my decade or so of watching porn on a regular basis. I do perv a lot, but i did that before anyway. I still think of women as people. If i find them attractive i will get horny...

Anyway the point i am trying to make is that i disagree with the assumption that watching porn has a negative impact on the way a man views or treats women. In my own experience it hasn't, and in fact because i have watched a lot of violent porn i am actually quite relaxed when i'm with a girl, because i have explored and satisfied my own desires already.

This is a debate as old as the hills.

There has even read a paper from one female acedemic who stated that watching porn made men better lovers as it showed them skills such as giving oral to a woman.

I see it as quite simple really, men and women had sex, and men looked at women as sex objects long before there were anyways of capturing images, and if all porn disappeared tomorrow, it would not change this.

Naturally we usually form opinion based on personal experience. That's completely understandable and there's nothing wrong with it.

However a statistical analysis based on 1 (your own experience) carries no scientific value. Human sciences - for example sociology, psychology - always deal with majorities, not absolutes. There will always be some who don't fall into the findings of a survey.

Now, I haven't done any research on porn myself but from what I remember from reading some:

Consuming porn at an age at which your mind has matured to a degree where its social perceptions and understanding of human structures have been shaped - "educated" if you will - doesn't necessarily have to have a negative effect at all.

When watching porn however takes over the role of "sex-ed" in a child or teenager, especially when started at a young age, it actually does deliver a perception of women as shown in porn movies - always and exclusively willing, docile, lustful - their only intention being sex. Sex objects.

It can have an opposite effect as well - an intimidating one. Men in porn movies are usually well-built, well-hung, they always want sex, they can always perform, they make the woman scream in pleasure and climax all the time. Let's just say very few men can actually deliver that in real life.

Porn can create a very distorted perception of men, women and sex in general.

Since consumation of porn is usually used to arouse oneself and most eventually pleasure oneself - thus leasing to a release of endorphines, making you feel good (putting it plainly). While this is perfectly normal, it can have an effect similar to drugs. It can create a craving for this feeling (especially in people who lack "natural satisfaction") and eventually lead to addiction.

I would never agree with anyone stating watching porn is "bad" and does have that kind of effect all the time on everyone. It is possible indeed but not inevitable.

The problem with your friend's initial assessment is, what do you classify as "porn"?

This is not a flippant question and the answer has to be at the root of your friend's thesis.

When I was very young (2nd grade) my friends and I would look at the encyclopedia where they had statues of "naked women."
Now, most authorities would not classify an encyclopedia as porn, however, in this instance, we were looking specifically for naked women. In this case, at this age, not yet even knowing why we liked looking at naked women, this book was "porn."

Bad for society? The encyclopedia? Or just an outlet for curious kids who had no idea why they were curious.

The question again, what is "porn"?

That is not really an question you can give a clear answer since there are so many different kind of things which may work as erotic material for some people while others do wouldn't get anything out of it.

For example this board has decent amount of rape scenes cut out from movies and for large majority of viewers these kind of scenes would not be erotic material. Also pictures of naked women is generally classified as pornographic material but at the same time any picture of a naked female could be viewed as art. In the end the endless amount of different kind of fetishes might make this subject the hardest to look at since some people can get aroused by shoes, trees or almost anything a human being can even think of.

I think most dictionaries classify porn as something which is made to arouse people and this might be the easiest way to look at it. Still this kind of classification fails to give any absolute meaning to the word since the nature of arousing material differs between each invidual person.

When it comes to the question in the opening message of this thread I'd say porn is not harmful for mature and otherwise sensible people. For example introducing pornographic material to immature or somehow disturbed mind could be harmful but normally it wouldn't have any major negative effects.

Personally I'm slightly interested in the possible long term effects so called indecent material could have on the whole society but I'd guess this is too controversial subject to get any definite answers to easily...

Well like the Pervi one stated this subject is as OLD as the Human race! Since all those nasty carvings of sexual postions appeared on early temples and etched onto stone walls as well!

Of course the name "Porn" aroused fom that little known Greek Island named........"Pornopli"!! It will always be with us exciting or disgusting us depending on your current views!

And as always PORN is in the "eye of the beholder" and ask not what it does for them but ask instead what it does for "YOU"!!

Porn was invented for people who want to have sex RIGHT NOW but for whatever reason their significant other is not available (i.e. working, sleeping, etc.)

Ok, I've done a lot of studying on this. Pretty much every study you read finds that for the majority of American's, porn changes mens views of women. Obviously there are exceptions, but there are exceptions to every rule.

In ancient times, you would have sex with one partner, and supposedly noone else, but in todays world, teenagers will have sex multiple times before marriage, which causes AIDS, and other diseases.

Why are kids having sex so much more than before? Its because our culture has come to accept it. Just like gay partnerships, when something is considered acceptable, there is no reason to stop. Gays have been around throughout history, but very rarely do they actually become accepted. In today's society, for the most part, gays are accepted, and voila! Gay partnerships are skyrocketing.

Its the same with porn, playboy broke through the barrier, and porn became reasonably acceptable, then the internet shot the porn industry forward. And every year, AIDS increases as teen sex increases. Teens are being inundated with porn, and so they turn to their cute little girlfriend, and they've got some ideas about what to do for the next little while.

Porn is hurting our culture, because it is contributing to the spread of AID's and other sexually transported diseases.

I'm still pretty young, and I remember just a couple of years ago I was ridiculously sheltered by my parents, I didn't even date. Then, out of curiosity, I turned to porn, and now... well here I am. I know its bad for me, and I do look at girls differently, but its addicting.

Which is where the main problem lies. Porn is addicting. Porn hurts men and womens ability to marry. Look at divorce rates, 100 years ago they wer 5%, now they're over 50%.

So to conclude, porn definitely hurts our world, but I don't personally think that fantasies hurt our world. I personally have fantasies, and so I come to this board, I download movies, etc. But I only watch the parts where the women are being stripped, and not the actual nudity/rape. Because it does change you, and for me, that would be a bad change.

I'd say you are focusing too much on pornography alone when talking about several different aspects of society which have radicly changed during the last centuries. For example christianity had major role in determining the common moral values in society before the last century but the church's influence has been declining for a good time now.

The rise of pornographic industry has also been affected by the development of technology. Basicly porn has been existing as long as human have been able to communicate with each other but the technology to easily produce different kind of pornographic material has been accelerating the amount of pornographic material being produced and distributed. Also the growing distribution rate during last decades is largely due the commonly used capitalist systems which emphasize on the most basic instincts of human beings and thus increase their visibility.

In contrast there are still plenty of countries with very different kind of govermental and religious systems. For example in islamic countries the nature of porn differs greatly from western countries. Basicly the amount of "freedom" the people have might be the largest factor when it comes to the prevalence of porn in society.

It would propably be more relevant to watch the changes in so called common morals when considering divorsity rates and starting age for sexuals activities than just porn.

Blah, this whole subject is starting to feel like it streches pretty damn far.

my turn lols

i dont think that porn is a bad thing because you could say that it satisfies the desires of men and allows them to "explore themselves"

and going on what people are saying about devorce and marages lasting longer blah blah blah i genrally disagree ... what you have to realise that yes they may have "stuck together" but if you analize the actual family the male more more abusing and possessive toward the woman and because of his sex drive she had to raise a family and satisfy her horny husband.. and i for one wouldnt want to be in that kind of position where my own children (if i had any) would be in danger because of their raging father

also if you say the porn is bad the earliest form of porn was at the brothels that were alwais shunned because if the "impurity" of the people that worked their ... what would have happened if the brothels of the world disappeared then LADIES WE WOULD BE IN TROUBLE because sexual assults would go on the rise which would be even worse than the divorce rate

AND ALSO !!! for couples i would think that porn would open their minds and allow people to experiment with their partners so then their (sex lives) are kept interesting lols so yeah ....

im sorry if my ideas offended anyone or made anyone angry or i came across as rude but yeah thats my 2 cents lols

Being aware & watching porn from a young age, can have an effect on your future sexual tastes and likes, usually thay will become more extreme, because normal porn isnt enough and gets boreing!

however this can also be because of factors out of our controll such as hormone levels!

Some times these factors can even leed to people going down illegal roads such as real life rape and CP.

Effects of Porn?
It all boils down to the individual. People can say, "It causes this," or, "It causes that," but in end, no two people will have the exact same response to the same pornography. Arguments saying that all porn is harmful forget to take into account that other media is just as flexible in interpretation. Much like saying everyone who reads the Bible WILL become a Christian.
No.
It is their own frame of mind that determines how they interpret what they are consuming, hence why many books fanatics complain about are not banned. Not everyone will read it the same way. Porn is the same way.
For me personally, porn provides a means to explore and understand areas of my sexuality I hadn't encountered before. IMO, if I didn't have such a liberal view of pornography, I would have likely found about such things on my own, but in ways I would not be pround of.
As a sidebar, since much of porn deals with naked human forms, it provides a surprising source for studying anatomy for my art.
That's about all I can come up with.

Ok, this is an old thread, but I wanted to throw in my 2 cents.
I would agree in part with those that said it depends on the individual.
It's my own opinion that it goes a little further than that.

I feel sexuality is part nature, part nurture.
For instance, in my own case, my parents showed simple affection in front of others.... light closed mouth pecks, holding hands, a hug. That was it.
However, I know from items my siblings and I ran across in late teens/early twenties that my father at least was at least into bondage.
I also know from open talks with said siblings, that all of us are, at the very least, into bondage in some form or another. Two of us are also bi-sexual.
This was certainly never taught to us, so our desires must be nature, not nurture.

I also feel, most humans like to watch. Even if they never admit it to themselves. Hence some of the popularity of "porn". IMHO.

I like other women. I like "porn". I like to "watch", and it also heightens my imagination for things I'd like to try myself. It has not changed my opinion of women, but it has broadened my fantasies of what I would like to happen with another woman. Or with a man, or a few of each, what the hell.

Now.... my husband.
He was basically raised the same way I was, as far as displays of affection.
However, I think from talking with him and members of his family, he has always felt a little insecure and had a somewhat skewed opinion of women in general. (doesn't make him a bad person, or a bad husband, just annoying sometimes.)
Also, he spent his late teens/early twenties, impressionable years, in the military overseas. Nothing wrong with that, but a LOT of the women he had contact with were either for hire and rather 2D so to speak, or desperately seeking an American husband so they could come here and hence, also rather 2D.
He also views "porn".
The main difference in our types of porn?
He likes the 2D still pictures. I prefer the 3D movies. If you see my point there. You see interaction in a movie, hear words and sounds, expressions, etc. You don't get that in a still image.
The movies he does watch, he expects the same out of me.

I'm sorry, I can't be still and let someone whale on my ass without moving and complaining rather loudly. It hurts. I do enjoy some light pain now and again, but I'm not a paid actress who's been doing it forever. Neither am I a "pain slut" who would look forward to it.
This last..... simple sexual differences easily worked out through communication. What I can't overcome with communication, so far, is his ingrained expectation. That I, like "every woman", is one of those 2D ladies he's dealt with or a paid actress who's dollar amount depends on how still she is and how well she "takes it".

Did he get this way from porn?
I don't think so.... I think we're back to nature/nurture. Nature for his desire to inflict pain (born sadist) and nurture for his impressionable years spent with the types of women he came across who had an agenda in pleasing who they had sex with.
I mean, I also have an agenda in pleasing him, I love him. But the agenda does not stem from my lively hood or a country I desire to move to.
I DO think, he has made, to some extent, his opinion about women worse. That is has the potential to make how he treats them worse.
That he may continue to expect what he views in 2D images and paid actresses, and well..... good luck with that.

My father also viewed porn, and I've never seen him treat any woman differently, or heard him speak to them differently. Same with my siblings.

Is it "bad" for our society? Yes, for children. They shouldn't be exposed to it until their brains are developed enough to separate it from reality.
Yes, for some adults who already have "something inside them" that will react to it negatively. Back to my husband, I think it affected his relationships with women to some extent, but not anything that can't be worked on. There are individuals out there who will act badly no matter what kind of images or movies they view, and porn could make it worse.
But, so could all the violent movies and games out these days.

I think those protesting against porn so loudly are worried how it will affect themselves and others' opinions of them more so than how it would affect those around them.

Just my opinion.
Feel free to disagree.
