Today, in London, and across the UK. This time it's to protest at the UK governments plans to cut welfare spending by £12bn across the next five years. Incidently, the UK parliament has just passed a bill in to law that it will committ 0.7% of annual GDP to foreign aid, a goal that it achieved last year. The sum total of this? £11.4bn spent on projects such as a pop band dubbed The Ethiopean Spice Girls, helping India put a rocket in space, and helping femae entrepenuers in China, the worlds second largest economy in 2014.

I'm sure though that if we cut our foreign aid budget, the same bleeding hearts would be marching again next week, adding yet more money to the policing bill.

The point of this thread? Can anyone guess the word for these people tgat springs to my mind?

The liberal press hasn’t coined a word for these folks. In that their only job is vote for whoever promises to give them more and more government supplied entitlements, they have ample time to protest and cause civil unrest. The people that work and pay taxes do not have the time to protest.

It’s similar to the slave era in the Southern United States prior to the Civil War. The masters sat in the shade sipping their Mint Juleps while overseeing the slaves as they toiled in the sun creating wealth.

That’s it! Why don’t we call the protesters the “Masters”?

There's an irony in this. The poor and unoccupied are the new elite, much like your rich elite rebelled against no taxation without representation. Why? They had the means and the time. I sincerely hope institutionalised poverty does not gain the upperhand in our political, social and cultural agenda.

About 49 percent of Americans live in households that receive some form of government benefits.

They simply vote their pocket books and couldn't recognize a statesman if their lives depended upon it.

The true elite are the politicians that use the taxpayers money and the wealth of future generations to purchase the votes of the 49%, while lining their pockets with the foreign and domestic bribes. The so called "poor" are simply their pawns.

I fear our country is in a terrible downward spiral.

After all, what does it say about a country where a mother has to fear for her sons life every time he goes out to rob a store or beat up a policeman?

The number of US citizens that receive some form of government benefits is something like 53% actually, but that figure includes tens of millions of retired individuals who are receiving Social Security and Medicare benefits. They worked, they paid their taxes and now are gaining the benefits they earned after reaching retirement and Medicare kick-in ages. Of course with an aging population due to the baby boomers getting older you are going to end up with more households/citizens receiving government benefits do to SSI and Medicare. However, in recent years there have actually been cuts to government assistance programs like Food Stamps. And if the "evil 49%" actually did get together in the US and vote, I'm sure there'd be a lot less Republicans in Congress. Also, I am not one of the US citizens receiving government benefits. Not one penny.

My 49% number came from the 2010 census. If somedude's numbers are correct, and I have no reason to doubt the revised updated number provided by an intelligent source, then we may have actually crossed the magical government dependency line. If so, we are genuinely fucked. The Republic may indeed be dead. The Democracy is alive and killing our country.

Baby Boomers are in theory getting back a portion of what they've paid in over the decades. I'm a baby boomer. I've had a job since 1961. There was that stint in the military, but that was still a job. A few months ago, I received my yearly Social Security report. Over the decades, my employers and I have paid Social Security $526,127.00. The Social Security Administration pays me $2,318.00 each month and collects $460.62 each week in taxes from me and my company.

Government dependents are not evil. They are victims of the system. Yes, they get food stamps, rent subsidies, tax free income, cell phones, etc., but they actually pay dearly for the freebies. It costs them their self esteem, their sense of individual responsibility, and their self respect. They become the ultimate victims of class warfare. Their only job is to vote and vote often.

Perfectlyformed, please tell me that you knew that the last line of my last post was a joke. By the way, every day at 2PM, I turn out the lights, have my secretary hold my calls and take a 30 minute nap. So, I'll take the nap.
