Default Practice Safe Surfing

Seems many users of this site (including myself!) are not the only ones to use their PC, and thus may be concerned with privacy issues. Innocent had to deal with a partner's spyware, and Tanya seems to have a nosy sister. Even if this isn't the case, you never know when a friend will visit and ask if they can check their email ("wow, what the hell's this in your history folder?"). Thought it might be poinient to start a thread where users can share tips on keeping other users from seeing their activity on RB.

Some of my ideas. First, if your still using internet explorer, for the love of God stop! There are other browsers out there with many more security features and which are just more user friendly for surfing. I personally use Firefox, which is available at http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ for free download. One of the best features is the infinite number of Extensions (https://addons.mozilla.org/?application=firefox) that you can download with Firefox to improve surfing (see below). I have heard good things about other browsers (e.g. Opera), but can't comment on them personally. From my (limited) knowledge, you can't do much better than Firefox.

Second, don't keep bookmarks. I visit other X-rated sites, and the URLs are all saved in a password protected word file which is hidden from other's eyes.

Third, clean up after yourself. Clear your bookmarks and cookie cache frequently to keep people from seeing where you've been. For IE users, this involves going into Tools/Internet Options... and clicking the "delete cookies" and "delete files" buttons. One thing; if there is a regular user of the computer, they will start to wonder where their saved info is. This is where Firefox becomes handy. One of the extensions I talked about, called Distrust (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1559/), hides all of your surfing activity while it is activated. Once turned off at the end of the session, it's like you never visited those "special" sites in the first place. A more extreme version of this extension is called Stealther (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1306/), but this makes it difficult to surf password sites, since no form information is permitted. Even at the end, if you are still paranoid that some surfing information could be left on your computer, the X-mod extension (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1484/) installes a panic button to the top of your browser. With 2 clicks, all of your form information is completely wiped.

Other people go further and clean their entire hard drive. Any time you delete a file, the "image" of that file is left on your computer until it is overwritten, sort of like when you write a note on a piece of paper, and the impression is left in the piece below once the top page is gone. Programs exist which essentially "overwrite" the ghost image to make it untraceable. Window Washer is popular for a price (http://www.webroot.com/consumer/prod...929&ac=5187396), as is the free software Eraser (http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/). Probably not necessary for most folks, but if you have paranoid fantasies of the FBI securing your system, these tools are suppose to make your activities untraceable. I welcome responses from more computer savy members as to whether they do as they claim.

Finally, I have a large database of pornographic material (including rape and other fetishes), that I would prefer no one stumble upon. Nothing is saved to the computer's main hard drive. I have a 20 gig external hard drive (about the size of a deck of cards) that stores my collection. Any time I want to view or add to it, I connect it to the computer through a USB port, then disconnect again when I'm done. Can't find my porn collection if it's not even on the computer in the first place, right?

OK, there are my suggestions. Hope others will add to these ideas with time. Happy surfing!!!

Simply click on link above and download to computer. Tell BF that you heard someone (e.g. a friend, a co-worker, etc.) talk about Firefox and how much better it is. If he knows anything of computers, he'll know Internet Explorer is a piece of shit.

From there, click on the other links to download and install the extensions. They will appear under the "Tools" link at the top.

FUCKIN' TELL ME ABOUT IT!!!

Latest kick in the ass...
Went to reload my OS (I do every once in a while for a "clean sweep"). Can't do any updates, because my software is too out of date, and no longer recognized by the update center. Called the help line, and told any help would cost me 50 FUCKING DOLLARS!!! FUCK THAT!!! "Hi, we fucked up the writing of this software, please pay us $50 to fix our mistake". How about Gal4 saying "Hi, fucked up your surgery, pay me money if you want me to put your left kidney back in". HOW THE FUCK CAN THEY KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS SHIT!!!

OK, enough of my rant.

<pant, pant>

REEEALLY need to learn to use Linux!!!

Get Knoppix:
http://www.knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html It's a cd-based linux that you can run without installing. If you have cable internet you simply put the cd into the computer, restart and you'll be able to surf around as soon as it loads. If you want to save any info, you'll need a usb drive, however.

If you get used to that and decide you want a permanent install, check out Ubuntu Linux it's a linux distribution which is tailored for ease of use.

Proxy Server - stops sites from reverse hacking you.
Proxy and proxy often. Also a good way to get more downloads on rapidshare.

http://www.publicproxyservers.com/

Some proxies are proxied themselves. But no need to get too complicated.
MKP4

PS - Mozilla is the way to go.

Kudos on your "I do what I want" attitude, Texas. Those members that can't scream "MINE!" everytime someone else wants to hop on their computer may still find some of this advice helpful.

And it's not just about those you grant access to your system. I have a friend who performs system security analysis for local businesses. To prove a point, he came over to my place with a customized laptop and successfully hacked into 5 separate computers that were in the area using a wi-fi connection. Had he wanted to, we could have gone through their entire systems bit by bit.

Oh, and if you ever need to take your system in for service, think about how comfortable you feel about the service tech at the repair shop having access to every aspect of your hard drive.

Covering your tracks is not about being cowardly, it just makes sense.
