I am somewhat of a computer neandrethal so this is probably about 4 steps to long, but I hit the "print screen" button and when it attempts to send it to my non existant printer I am able to save it to an editing program, in this case powerpoint (dont ask, I just get around easier in there). once there I create a new slide, paste in the capture and can then trim and adjust and resize to what I need. Once I have it right I hit save as and convert it to a jpeg.

Requires Photoshop

Let's say your screen resolution is 1024x768.
Step 1. Hit Print Screen key on your keyboard.
Step 2. Open Photoshop.
Step 3. Hit Ctrl+N (or File/New from the Menu).
Step 4. Press OK in the dialog box that appears. (Make sure resolution is set to 72 pixels/inch and Color mode is set to RGB 8 bits/channel)
Step 5. A New blank document with resolution 1024x768 opens.

Step 7. The whole screen area is pasted on a new layer in your document.
Step 8. Select the part of the screen with the Rectacgular Selection Tool (UpLeft of the toolbox on the left side of the program layout).
Step 9. Select Image/Crop from the Menu.
Step 10. Save the image in a format you like.
