A friend passed this on
http://transabled.org
All I can say is that this is NOT a joke. This is very, very real. As someone who has struggled to deal with chronic illness for the last two years, I would very much like these people to be taken out and shot. |

Sounds very much like Munchausen's Syndrome to me. People making themselves or their children ill so that others will feel sorry for them.

Munchausen's is when you make yourself sick, and Munchausens by Proxy is when you make your children sick. They actually diagnose this shit as diseases..but to me its about getting attention.

Wait a minute, let me get this right, these people want to be disabled?? Maybe they should speak with some real disabled people and find out what it's really like. I was totally inspired when I watched the para-olympics this year, people who have something go wrong and don't let it hold them back from their dreams are inspirational.

As someone who has to live with a semi-disability for the rest of my life I find that fucking offensive!

In defense to those on that site... I am speaking objectively, as I know nothing about being "transabled", I didnt even peak at the article untill now...its a mental condition that they have. It must run deep..
You shouldnt find it offensive. As someone who lives with hypochondriasis..I am afraid of offending people who are really sick, but you know what, I dont care, because in my mind, its not offensive. We dont choose to live with with this....but we have to live it with everyday, so maybe you shouldnt poke fun at people with these conditions. I know that none of you can fathom why they would do this, and I am not surprised. Some people dont and will never understand mental illness. I had to deal with so many people poking fun at me and being pissed off and saying I was crazy and stupid. To them, its not a "disease" but to me, it was something very present in my life that caused misery, stress, sleepless nights, tears, and bills. Its under control now, but some days are worse than others. You just dont know what its like to live with something like that. I knew many young girls who were "cutters". You cant just tell them "you are stupid for doing that" Because you dont know how your emotions manifest themselves into physical acts. They feel so rotten on the inside, cutting is the way to "punish" themselves...or make themselves look as ugly on the outside as they feel on the inside. Most of the time, its a big cry for help. And you shouldnt cry about whats offensive, because it doesnt concern you. If someone wants to sever a limb, whats it to you? Last edited by ChiTownHoney; 12-15-2008 at 01:11 AM. |

Excuse me, but I AM mentally (anxiety, depression) as well as physically ill, so I DO get mental illness.
I'm not poking fun. I get that they have body issues. What offends me is that in order to cope with their problems, they pretend to be disabled. This causes real problems for people who have real disabilities - especially those with chronic illnesses that are not readily visible - because many of us are already accused of malingering, and this can only serve to make it worse. |

Mental illness is difficult for people to understand until they suffer from it themselves. Likewise to disabilities..
People have all sorts of conditions. I think that 'transabled' stuff is largely about being needy, much like Munchhausens & Munchhausens by proxy. A physical need to do something about the state of their mind. The thing that kind of annoys me.. is the choice. You can (kind of) choose to do that, whereas someone who had an accident/was born like/ is disabled in some way couldn't. This opinion is however, coming on the side where I don't have a choice .. xx |

I hear you.
The pretending is what annoys me. Surely they could have found other ways to deal with their problems. By pretending they exacerbate the social problems that real disabled people face. |
