Boycotting RB

I wonder if we regulars had a 24 hour boycott of the site, would that prove anything to admin?

No. The majority of members and visitors just go in the video sections. Apart from the odd note of thanks, there is hardly any dialogue at all. If any of the are bothered by the spam, they're not very vocal about it. I doubt if a boycott would have any effect on the site. We'd just come back to even more spam than ever!

Yeah, just was musing to be honest, trying to figure a way to get admins attention...sigh...it seems either most of the posts are either spam, us talking about spam, or us reporting about spam...grrr

Whats the point of being vocal about the spam on here? Its like talking to a goldfish..nothing ever gets done about it.. today.. the entire mainstream rape section is nothing but spam except for about 3 threads.. that's just sad.

yeah.. and I was even nice and respectful.. I contacted Admin a while ago about the spam. A little over a month later, I got a reply thanking me and asking a follow-up question. I answered him and elaborated a bit more about steps that might be taken. I'm awaiting a reply.

From some other long-timers here, I've been told that Admin only checks in here around once a month, so I'm waiting patiently. In the meantime, I'm researching various options that can be taken so that I can give Admin more detailed advice, should he want it. I've even installed a copy of vBulletin 3.8.7 (what Rape Board runs on) on a test server to try out various plug-ins to see how they work.

My impression from my limited contact with Admin is that he recognizes that we have a serious problem and that he's willing to consider steps that he'd previously rejected. Whether anything will come of it or not, I don't know. But I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Meanwhile, I can't give Crotch_Ripper, Somedude, and baur_147 enough praise for their efforts to keep this place running. Thank you very much, guys! I appreciate you all. And if there's anything more that I can do to help you beyond what I'm already doing, please let me know.

I wonder what Becka, Sanitarium and Sodoman would make of the chaos if they were to check in. Things are at the worst I can remember seeing in the five years I've been a member here. It's worth mentioning them, because they've put in as much hard work as the other three and we really need them now!

Spam bots will go to a forum even if the forum is completely dead and no real members are posting, so no a boycott won't work.

Admin is from Russia and last I know of he is not completely fluent in English. Language barrier is part of the problem here and inactivity.

Members have been talking and asking about giving the mods power to block IP addresses for years. The fact that admin gave that power to CR really shows that he understands the issue and is trying his best. I'm a little surprised he didn't give SD the power to ban IP's since he's head mod, but at least admin gave someone that power.

Even with my limited technical knowledge I had worked out that automated spambots would not be affected by a boycott, the idea was aimed at admin, a kind of, 'this is whats going to happen eventually if this bullshit is not sorted' concept.

Yes he gave the power to CR, then just as quickly took it away from him, which leads to conclude either he does not care as much as we believe, or that in actual fact, has something to do with the spam attacks. Apparently he has another site that has gone the same way and has been dead for a few years, that should tell us all that we need to know about his attitude to the sites really.

Lets be honest, Sierra and Phantom managed to hold down jobs, run their own site and in Phants case, mod here. If there can do all that, surely our admin can put more effort in here, if they can't, maybe they need to move the job to someone who can...

That's true, but the difference is that we did not run the site to sell anything and we were, to a greater or lesser degree, active on both sites by choice. Once we stopped being active KO went to shit and we finally closed it down. RB is not this admin's interest. It's just a marketing tool. He does not now and never did care whether the community survives. In fact it's probably easier for him if it doesn't. Fewer people whining.

He doesn't want IPs banned is there might possibly be someone in the hoards of attacking spammers who might buy something from him. Unlikely, but you never know. Back in the heyday of RB that worked fine. There was spam, of course, but not so much of the automated bots who would come on and put up hundreds of posts in just minutes.

The biggest difference with the heyday though, was that the volume of genuine traffic here always made the spam seem less. Diluted it. Drowned it out. Even on a bad day. Now, it only takes a couple of dozen posts to make the board appear flooded.
