In my admittedly very limited experience, I find the only way for my head to be in it is to have planned the setup and setting in advance very carefully. The planned and the spontaneous have to coexist very closely in order for it to happen "naturally" and still be completely controlled. So the action itself can be entirely free-styled. As long as she knows I will be there at 7:30 coming in through the side door and that its going to be a 2-3 hour session, we can make sure the house is empty and that Gladys and the girls are not suddenly going to show up to play bridge right in the middle of re-enacting the subway scene. With those variables planned for, now you can relax your head and let things flow freely.
