If you haven't seen this, the US just shut down megaupload under CURRENT AND EXISTING anti-piracy laws!
A small part of the article states that---
The US Chamber of Commerce has defended the proposed laws saying that enforcement agencies "lack the tools" to effectively apply existing intellectual property laws to the digital world.

Industry watchers suggest this latest move may feed into the wider debate.

"Neither of the bills are close to being passed - they need further revision. But it appears that officials are able to use existing tools to go after a business alleged to be inducing piracy," said Gartner's media distribution expert Mike McGuire.

"It begs the question that if you can find and arrest people who are suspected to be involved in piracy using existing laws, then why introduce further regulations which are US-only and potentially damaging."

One thing I can think of, and I have no facts to support this so forgive me if I'm wrong, but one reason may be that if they can introduce and pass laws in the US, aimed at the US then the government would have some grounds to use that as leverage in negotiations with other countries to do the same.

Another reason, and I have heard this stated by several lawmakers on the hill, is that most of our current body of law is difficult to apply to newr forms of media and the way that media is transferred. That to me makes at least some sense as most of our copywrite laws are decades old or older and no doubt do need to be updated given the explosion in technology.

Then of course there is the old, ever-present standby reason... Washington just loves to meddle with shite!!
