Sorry to be such a downer today folks but when I saw this news I simply had to comment.

I've been following the case off and on since it first happened and it seemed to me that the prosecution had a good chance to lock the guy up for a very long time. But NO, they made a plea deal that would do the US proud, they let the guy off with one year on a manslaughter charge. Ha! Putting aside that the man was an experienced dive instructor, the idea that he "went to get help" is laughable. How would ANY person react when a loved one was in peril? They would work {even at the risk of their own life} to get that loved one to safety. I guess these days if you have someone you want to bump off you should take them on a vacation to Queensland!

Not meant to disparage the Aussies here but my god what a travesty of justice!

The thing is, this might not have been thet easy to prove.

Do we know motive? Why would have killed his new wife? Would it be easy for the prosecution to prove that he delibrately murdered his wife, not that it was somekind of tragic accident, and that all he's guilty off is incompetence?

Everybody thought it was murder and then a few months later the after the inquest someone decided it was murder, if I was on the jury that would put some doubt in my mind.

And if you think that is far fetched remember OJ Simpson, get the right lawyer and look what happens.

Good point. Guilt does have to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt, and rightly so, to avoid wrongful conviction of innocent people (something which nevertheless still happens too often). Tragically, that does mean that sometimes the guilty will escape justice. One can only hope there's a shark out there somewhere with this guy's name on it.

You have absolutely no fucking idea what you are talking about because people react differently to different situations and you have no clue how people, including yourself, would react. You cant know what someone in a desperate situation is thinking. Some people are irrational.

That was my point on that. However I do think that the man is obviously guilty, but for you to go and make such a statement...whatever.

Chi, I know if a loved one of yours was in trouble you would likely sit there and tell them that they didn't understand what it was to be in pain as they bled to death, since you always know more about everyone else than they themselves do. And I know exactly what I am talking about as I am just as much an "expert" as yourself into human nature if not more so as I have a slightly less jaded outlook on life than you seem to have {how's that for telling other folks how they think?}

I'm laughing my ass off here as you don't seem to realize that nothing is more American than the right to criticize one's own government, legal system or anything else which WE citizens feel need fixing.
