World War II Soviet Army rape in Germany.

I'm looking for seriuos mainstream movies about german women and girls who were raped by Soviet Red Army soldiers at the end of World War II.

I'm not certain but I thought there was some depiction of this at the end of the movie "Downfall".

I ran some searches for the topic.

I found mention of another film that focuses more on this topic.

Havent seen it, but Woman in Berlin is supposed to 'realistic', especially the first bit of it.

nothing in Downfall, an otherwise great film, even though for definite Hitler's cook and secretary were raped (the cook murdered too). I think the German production team in Downfall didnt want to raise the issue of the mass rape for fear of portraying Germans as 'victims.'

Havent heard of it being dealt with any other mainstream movie apart from woman in Berlin.

Antony Beevor's book 'Berlin' goes into quite graphic detail of what happened to women during the Red Army's onslaught, describing how the rape evolved from snuff-like gang-rape and mutilation in East Prussia at the start to a kind of 'comfort women' 'soft rape' culture after Berlin fell and the early months of post-war Soviet occupation.

I started to do a paper on this in college... but tbh... the subject matter was just too damn disturbing. One thing that has stuck with me over the years is how little is known about the rape of Berlin.

The Russians certianly didnt advertise it and the germans themselves seemed to bury it.. to erase it from their national memory. Maybe it was for the best. Nothing they could do after the fact anyway...

Thank you all for your information. I’m a senior person’s assistant in a nursery home in Fort Lauderdale, Fl. and this summer I just met a 79 years old German lady who was a victim. It happened one day I was reading the newspaper and discussing with a coworker about a case of rape in the news and this lady named Anne-Marie began to speak out her story. Her father had been a lieutenant in the Nazi army, fought and died in the eastern front and she, her older sister and mother were raped several times by soviet soldiers in Berlin on May and June, 1945. She later married to an American engineer on 1954 and came to U.S.
I had heard about these stories before, but never directly from a victim.

It definitely would be a setting for a gang-rape in a story. The older women were probably thrown to the enlisted men while the NKVD and high officers plucked their choice of younger women.

Just finished reading "A Woman in Berlin" and highly recommend it. The author is an excellent writer even more so given the circumstances in which she wrote her diary. The book is unique in that it gives a first person account into what was arguably one of the most important historical events in the last 100 years. Also the accounts and behavior of both the victors and the vanquished cannot be oversimplified. Many Russians, even those who made a habit of brutalizing women, were very fond and kind to children for instance. Food was a major consideration. After a while, it became clear that women (and by extension German men) were dependent on the patronage of Russian soldiers. The dynamic became less a question of "rape" but of an "arrangement". Was also interesting to see how many people suffered even more after the Russian army moved further West and the level of privation increased further still.

I am interested in personal testimonies about this rape... I found some on internet, and also in the book "Downfall". I heard it is good book "Silesian Inferno", but I am unable to get it... Anybody red it?

Forty years ago a major film called The 25th Hour (which wss based on a book) depicted the treatment of Romanians by the German army and by their Russian occupiers afterwards. In it, the wife of the protagonist (played by the sultry actress Virna Lisi) is raped by member of the conquering Russian army and is impregnated. The film later shows the illegitimate child being carried by the husband of the raped woman (played admirably by the late Anthony Quinn). Years ago, I read the book upon which the film was made, and the scene of the rape and impregnation is graphic (and really hot!), even by today's standards.

I read an English language translation. Even translated, the rape scene was memorable, especially for an adolescent like me. Perhaps that's what spawned my obsession with wartime rapes. (sigh!)

It has been a while but I seem to recall at least some passing mention of rape or forced sex by Germans running concentration camps in the movie "Schlindler's List"

There's a posting here on RB for a Polish film called Roza. There's no voice over in English or subtitles but it's understandable what is happening especially if you read about it before viewing. I liked it. I recommend it. Especially, were the seven or so women where on the ground and the Russians having their fun with them.

I have finished reading the "Woman in Berlin" yesterday. Good book. Recommend it. The common phrase she said that women asked each other after the fall of Berlin was "Where you?" That's it. and if they nodded. "How many?" Saw the movie on line and didn't think it was good, no really good rape scenes as I remember. There were two but they were done in the dark and not exciting.

I read Beevor's book about the fall of Berlin. Liked it. Recommend it. But really didn't think it spoke that much about the mass rape situation.

An often overlooked fact is the rape of women in Austria when the Russians arrived. When they left Austria as part of the deal with the other Allies, the Communists did very poorly in elections. It seens the Austrians didn't like their taste of Communism and never forgot it.

And the Russians never forgot either, it took the fall of The Wall and the Polish Revolution 30 years later before there was another free election in Eastern Europe.

That almost seems like ancient history now... our young ones here in the west have no idea what brutes the Russians are. Not all Russian people of course, but their government most definately.
