The purge

There's a new movie coming out called The Purge about a society where one night a year there are no rules,laws, the police wont come if they're called and everyone is told to stay inside or face whatever consequences come to them.

This just screams open invitation for rape, or do you think its too much/makes it too easy?
would you go out during this night to go looking for trouble?

i might debate going and looking for trouble if i knew dying wasn't involved lol

I do admit, however, that there is something very appealing about smashing and burning things. If there was no sex involved I'd be on the front lines.

It's def an interesting premise and I think I'll watch. In real life, I'd probably just hunker down in my house with my guns. Then again, I'm sure I'd get the itch to go out and cause trouble every now and then

Oh the choices, chances are you'd probably get shot by someone holding a grudge against you but then again, the gentleman thing to do would be to keep a girl company and make sure she stays out of trouble

Deep down we are all animals ruled by savage instincts. If something like this ever came true the criminal elements of society would basically destroy the rest if they could, there would be looting pillage and yes rape on a mass scale. And thus the rest of us would have to defend ourselves, so everyone would spend all their time preparing for the one day of war and chaos.

Seriously dumb concept, it's like saying we would ONLY rape that one night. As if we'd go out raping on the ONLY night when the entire non-homeless female population is armed to the ovaries. I imagine the army would finally be put to some decent use and be sent in the next morning to restore order, as people who have spent the last few hours murdering others are probably not going to think twice about shooting cops who are leaving the station to begin clean-up.

Speaking of killing, it's a damn lock that it'll just be yet another Hollywood propaganda flick aimed at subtly glamourising it. The average kids sees, what, over a thousand simulated killings of men by men before he's 18, and they wonder why murders doesn't generate sheer outrage unless the vic is famous, female or a child...

I also imagine the hotels of Tijuana/Vancouver etc would be filled to the rafters with Americans that night.

agreed here. though there is a strong temptation initially to want to go out and be "a rapist, murder, robber" at this time, the risk involved would be too great. hell, people might be chasing you just cuz you looked funny or where in the area at the wrong time and no one would be able to stop them. nah, as appealing as the initial view of this idea is, in the end it would be a no brainer to remove such a law from the system and have all these things marked illegal for our own safety.

Looks like an interesting movie but the concept of home invasion movies has been done to death. I'm thinking that rape will not be a part of the film except maybe in passing - I'd be seriously shocked if any were depicted here in a mainstream Hollywood film.

Jaybee...it's a movie...hence you need a suspension of disbelief.

In a world where society 'accepts' a night of no criminal charges, EVERY crime would increase. During which any sane person would just leave town or head into their hidden bunker during this night...it'll be a good watch if they have a good script/director regardless of how unbelievable the concept may be.

This is not actually too far off from my premise of state-sponsored televised violence to placate the masses. In my idea, weekly shows involve game-show type scenarios in which contestants vie for cash and prizes while risking rape, assault and death before a nationally televised viewership as well as a live studio audience (...and now here's your host, Diiiiiiiiick Biggerrrrrrs!).

But I do enjoy the idea of controlled, sanctioned violence as a deterrent to random crime. "Hey...don't kill that stranger and risk life in prison. Purge day is coming up in a few weeks!" I know the studios will make the film a total FUBAR, but it is a premise that has potential in the right hands.

I've got one that's worked well for hundreds of films I've seen in, because in each case the film has led me to think, "Yep, that could happen", but this CANNOT. Criminals, by their single defining trait, disobey laws. Imagine this actually happens. Do you think they'll arbitrarily choose to obey a law that confines their criminality to just one night in the whole year? Do you think that when the 2nd buzzer goes, ending the purge, that all violence will suddenly stop? This is being marketed as a possible future America - not alternate universe, but this one. Unless they start putting some mind-altering chemicals into the water table/atmosphere, this concept - though it is very tantalising - is unworkable in 2 decades, or 2 centuries or 2 millennia.

Also, violence breeds violence. The more people start to indulge in it, they more they will want to, and trust me, they're not going to wait like good little boys and girls for 364 days to pass before going on another rampage.

Don't get me wrong I'll probably watch it when it's released, for the sake of realism I'm keeping my expectations slightly north of zero for this one.

Frankly, that's wishful thinking. I've read that The Purge was a big letdown for many viewers, apparently it has ONE good act, but overall it's a washout. Sorry everyone, just trying to keep your hopes low so they don't get dashed.

Wait Wait, "The Purge" is actually centered around rape? I thought it was going to be one of those generic anarchy movies about people not knowing who to trust etc etc blah blah blah

I've just seem the trailer, looks just like another home invasion/ siege movies, with the twist of all crime being legal.

It is an interesting premise though.
