Phanton and Sierra ,

I had a tumor and a section of my bowel removed from my lower intestines. Luckily (for me), it was benign. Unfortumately (for me), I developed a staff infection.

Damn, I miss the days when hospitals smelled like hospitals. Now, they just smell like any other office building.

As I was being wheeled out, I insisted that the nurse's aid in charge of my chair let me see the operating room where the knife fight occurred. I was totally grossed out by the smell of death and rancid meat. I've been in remote field hospitals that were cleaner and smelled a hell of a lot better. A Greyhound bus station toilet would have been preferable! What ever happened to sterilizing the operating theater? No wonder they kick you out before you can walk! You could die of a paper cut in those filthy dungeons! But, I'm better now. If I could get my teeth into something other than a liquid diet and into a piece of Black Angus Beef, I'd be all better! Fuck HMOs, PPOs and socialized medicine!

And, thank you Phantom and Sierra. I missed you too!

I want to thank everyone for their kind wishes and sincere get well notes.

Sparks, I haven't been to a VA hospital since 1974. They were butcher shops then and heaven knows what they've become. I have private insurance and I went to Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. I had a top notch surgeon and a top notch hospital. It's just that the asssembly line approach to medicine caused by the insurance companies and governemnet pressure to reduce costs has resulted in a nightmare. There were 13 surgeries in the operating theater on the day that I had my surgery. My surgery took 2.5 hours. You do the math. Where did they find the time to clean the place up. I have visions of an 1864 civil war field tent with one casualty being carried off, an orderly throwing a bucket of water on the table and the next casualty being dropped on the table.
After my fight with staph, I did some research. I found this little tidbit:

"At least 103,000 people die from hospital-acquired infections annually in the U.S., more than from AIDS, breast cancer and auto accidents combined, said Betsy McCaughey, chairwoman and founder of the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths."

In the last year, I had one neighbor that died of staph after back surgery and an uncle that almost died of staph after heart surgery. It's not just a fluke, it's a real medical crisis.

It's like MRSA here in the UK. I know of several people that have had that, luckily none of them had died.
