Apparently Britain now has a "Flu Tsar". For fucks sake, what's wrong with simply calling him a public health official? Fucking drama queens.

Well I'm still not dead, despite eating raw pig every day for the last week. I'm not even coughing except when I light a fag or inhale concrete dust. Dust will kill me first, dust kills more scum than the flu.

its really depressing that a lot of people think that, so the pig industry is almost dead in the span of a week, so they had to give it the name of a terminator to make it sound more sterile. god, humans are such sheeple.

Swine flu has mainly killed people in third world countries where the healthcare is poor. Most 1st world countries don't have a problem, just hysteria and lots of "sufferers" on TV talking about how their sick day was from miss.piggy.

The only "scary" thing about it is that is affects young people equally as older people, and the infectiousness is BEFORE symptoms, ie. can transmit to people before you get a temperature.

I was a very sickly child. Caught everything going. As a result I now as an adult have a strong immune system and any virus that comes near me tends to get its arse kicked by my trusty T-cells. I have a box of tissues just in case and I highly recommend a packet of lockets and a day or 2 in bed if you really need it. Apart from that I would say alot of this is the media waving its arms and shouting "hey look at me!"

Although I must say its the most news worthy thing that been reported of late in any media

BTN, a strong immune system could be a danger in itself as it may end up wiping you out instead of a virus. It's a concept I've not got my head around yet but it is apparently what happened with the Spanish Flu after The Great War. Perhaps we have a medical type that can explain it for us?

Viruses are strands of DNA wraped in a couple of enzimes. It's infects bodily cells, making them into factories used to pump out more viruses. To do so, the cells DNA strands are reprogrammed to be similar to the viruses. In extreme cases, so much so that the bodies white cells (designated virus fighters) missidetntify those cells as viruses.

This is simplified, of course.

I'm not sure if you got me... The immune system attacks all infected cells in the body. And in an infection, that is a lot of cells, too much for the body to handle.

The infected ("alien") body cells are useful only to the viruses.

I think I get it now. Microbiology was never my strong point. The infected cells turn out more organisms that are similar to the virus but aren't actually the virus, and the immune system attacks these too?

No, the infected cells turn out more viruses. However, the infected cells are no longer similar to healthy cells. Since the immune system is programmed to attack anything that is not a healthy body cell, the infected cells get wiped out as well.
