Payment (Open) - Rape Board

Ava had always been a daddy's girl, especially after her mother had died. Now that she was in college she and her father were closer than ever, chatting on the phone daily for hours at a time. Fortunately, the end of the term had arrived and Ava was coming back home. Her boots clicked crisply on the cobble stoned walkway as she headed toward her house, suitcase in hand, her dark hair tied back, wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

What she didn't know was that her father was a professional hitman for the local mob - a rather good one at that. Unfortunately, his last job had been a complete failure. In order to prove his loyalty and save his own life, Ava's father had sold her to the mob. But she didn't know this. Instead, she unlocked the front door to the house, kicking off her shoes by the door before entering.

"Dad!" She called out cheerfully, shutting the door behind her. "I'm home!"

No answer.

Curious, Ava dropped her belongings by the door, shutting it quietly behind her. Slowly, carefully, she crept through the house, feeling oddly like a character in a horror film. "Dad?" She called out again, an unmistakable edge of fear in her voice. Never in all of her 18 years of life had her father not been home to greet her, except for when he was on one of his infrequent business trips. A thousand possibilities swarmed her mind. What if he was hurt? What if he was in the hospital right now and -?

"In here, sweetheart," her father called from the kitchen, interrupting her thoughts. Feeling foolish for letting her imagination get the best of her, she rushed into the room, her blue eyes practically sparkling with relief. "Dad!" She cried happily. But no... Something was wrong. Her father sat hunched over the kitchen table, two bottles of whiskey - one empty and the other almost empty - at his side. He didn't even look at her when she bounded in, instead staring into the contents of his drink.

"Ava... I've been a good father haven't I?"

She looked at him, confused. "Yeah, of course. Why?"

He ignored her. "Sometimes we make mistakes. Things go wrong. Sacrifices have to be made," he cleared his throat and finally looked up at her, his eyes vacant and unfocused. "Forgive me."

"Wh-what are you talking about?" Ava asked. She felt a growing sense of dread fill her and she took a step backward.

"Here, sit Ava." Her father beckoned, as he poured her a drink. She sipped the whiskey with wide eyes.

"I have tried to protect you as long as I could, but now you are 18, they have the right. It's in the contract, and I am tired of running."

"What contract?" Ava exclaimed, gulping down more of the alcohol, trying to summon up more courage for what's to come.

"When you mother died, the contract ended prematurely," He continued, "and once you turned 18, they've been circling, haunting, chasing me all this time ... but I can't hide you anymore ... they've ... HE has found us."

The vague words of a drunken, broken man made little sense, but the danger expressed was obvious. Ava began to stand up, only to find herself stumbling to her feet, with her head spinning, her heart racing, her father sobbing.

The back door opened, Ava only heard footsteps and saw blurred faces. The sound of Mac barking in the yard faded to the background as she felt rope around her wrists.

"Finally, we will return Number 14 to her owner."
