A sad day for me - Rape Board

I cried today. Yes on my birthday too!

I am 68 today and it was one of the saddest days of my life. My old friend Wolf went into hospital two days ago and has been given two months to live. He is riddled with liver cancer and there is no hope.

I met my old friend when I first arrived in Tasmania and was made welcome after being introduced by mutual friends.

Wolf served in the Hitler Youth from 1941 to 1944 and escaped from prison in East Germany in 1949 before coming to Australia.

We hit it off straight away and spent many happy and contented hours chewing the fat, discussing history and arguing how we would put the country to rights. He is one of nature's gentlemen and I will miss him immensely.

I have shaken the same hand that once shook the hands of Hitler, Axmann and von Shirach but he never boasted of it and deplored the futility of war.

I cried and I am not ashamed. Life will not be the same without him.

Sounds like a very interesting person to have chewed the fat with. I always enjoy talking to people who 'lived' history.

Damn, that is sad. I live by the rule of "what would I want in this situation" and maybe if I were him I'd want my mate to make me smile to my grave. I hope you find the strength. And hopefully it will be returned when you're ready to pop your own clogs.

I thought we were going to hear how you went to the pub after drawing your pension, only to learn that the pub had no beer. Or whisky for that matter.

You're a tough old goat, and I've witnessed some of your trials in the last couple of years (thankfully not the sort of trial that comes of man being caught with sheep, since they haven't outlawed that where you live yet) and I'm sure you'll bounce back as you do time and again.

Still, no amount of heartfelt sympathy can amend for losing a friend or loved one, you have as ever my best wishes mate so if you need somone to make you laugh until you cry then you know where I am. Hopefully you can find a way to pass some of this joy on to your friend in his final days. I think I would have been honoured to have met your friend Wolf, as honoured as I would be if I ever have the chance to travel to Van Diemans land and meet your good self.

As others have said take the time left and use it to rejoice in his life. In your conversations with him you have no doubt gained an insight to that period that few of us get to experience. Take that knowledge and pass it on so it isnt lost to time.

For in the end that is your friend's best legacy.

I'm sorry you are loosing a good friend. We don't make those so easily as we get on. Hard to find someone you can even tolerate for long anymore.

Friendship is the only investment that pays both parties everything they put into it and more. None of us can afford to lose those people we hold dear - they leave holes in our life. Although those holes might soften around the edges a bit with time, they are never truly filled. My heart goes out to you and all those who knew this remarkable man.

Aside from the personal loss to all that knew him, there can't be many left who (as you say) shook the hand of Hitler. I wish we could capture the treasure chest of memories each person carries with him as they view the events of history.

Sorry is so to little in a case like this. And it is always okay to cry shows that we are human and still care for another.

Keep those good memories of your friend in your mind as well as your heart and then he will live on forever!

Loss is very hard to take but with prayers and support from your friends here and over there it lessens the pain and some of the hurt.

Take care be well and visit your friend as you can all my best to you and him!

My best friend Wolf died tonight at 9.30 pm in the arms of his family. 1930 - 2011.
