In the early years of the troubles, before the rise of the Provos, some hard line ministers in the Fianna Fail government of Jack Lynch were pushing to send the Irish army north of the border to protect the nationalist areas, particularly in Derry. Realistically, the Irish Defense forces were no match for the British Army, but had they clashed it may have forced the UN to become more involved.
