The Ulster Boxing Council has agreed to pay £8500 compensation to a former amatuer boxer after the Equalities Commission backed a case in which the boxer alleged that he was not picked for the Northern Ireland junior Commonwealth team in 2015 because he is a protestant.

Whilst they say the payment is not an admission of guilt, the UBC have released a statement that the entire Northern Ireland boxing community were shocked the boxer was not selected at the time, and have since reorganised their selection process, and re-staffed the selection board.

The boxer, now a professional in his early twenties, has trained at the same West Belfast gym since his childhood, and despite training in a club in a Catholic area of the city, his religious background is well known amongst his peers. He stated that to his knowledge, none of the boxers selected for Northern Irelands 2015 Commonwealth boxing team was from a protestant background. He himself was recommended for selection, but was not even given a chance to a “play-off” bout to secure a place.
