The United Kingdom has a veto on the UN security council. It would have been interesting to see what would happen. French troops on British soil perhaps? You have to remember that the UK is also a member of NATO, which Ireland never has been.
Certainly if Irish troops had intervened during the 70s/80s, the British public would have cheered the British army all the way to Dublin and beyond.
