Irelands priminister, Leo Varadkar is insisting that a Brexit deal be done by November. However he still isn't shifting from his position that Northern Ireland should remain in the customs union, and subject to ECJ rulings, effectively placing a border between the island of Ireland, and the rest of the British Isles.

I know many Irish people that have been travelling between the Republic and Great Britain for work from before our nations joined the then common market. I would be fascinated to know from a European Federalist how having customs and possibly passport controls put in place for those people will be some how better than having them on the island itself.

Varadkar suggests that the controls need not be physically present at Great British points of entry and exit, but can be done remotely. If this is so, can they not also be done remotely in Ireland, where the actual international border exists?
