The possibility of parole in ten years was the result of plea bargain in exchange for testimony against the others involved. Truly a henious crime, and the possibilty of only serving ten years seems grossly lenient, but the plea bargain practice is a fact of life in civilain as well military criminal trials.

Did the prosecutors need this deal for a conviction? I don't know, apparently they thought they did.
