Some economists are predicting a drop in the cost of living for the UK, if we remove EU tariffs on goods from outside the EU. EU trade policies are stringently protectionist, they make Trump look like a trade liberal by comparison. Tariffs are particularly high on manufactured goods and processed foods. Some think this drives poverty in the worlds least developed nations.

The imposition of tariffs on UK goods may cause us to reciprocate. The UK would be net benefactors of this as more EU goods flow in to the UK than UK goods in to the EU.

It is all a question of what is more important to the EU, protecting its federal ambitions, or looking after its citizens. The UK ought to have the upper hand in all this, except that we have a political class married to the European project.

Having a free port in Belfast ought to make the republic more amenable to the UK over Brexit too, but we shall see!
