I wasn't here for the first crash - just heard about it from others.

Servers crash for various reasons. The last one here at RB happened because of a DDOS attack by someone who was stealing other people's movie links and got pissed off because he got banned for it. When that happens, a server must be shut down or it will get constipated from all the data flowing in and freeze. Admin here is the owner of one or more of the Russian rape sites and doesn't always pay a lot of attention to RB, so data was lost.

Other than actual attack, servers can crash just because they are contrary pieces of equipment and software which like to cause problems, no different from your PC or laptop.

I'm assuming that Wicked, who is a competent tech guy, has a backup. All he would need to do is to re-install the software (I think he uses vBulletin) and read his backup database back in. I did it twice on KO and had the site back up within a day. I can't think of any reason why RD would not be back up within a couple of days, to be honest. I can only assume there is some other issue preventing him from bringing the site back up.
