The original war on Christmas of course, was fought by the Parliamentarians, who after the English civil war, made celebrating Christmas illegal.

There was a documentary on television here a couple of years ago, "Are you a Roundhead, or a Cavalier?". The theory was that the civil war here had a much deeper and far reaching impact on English, and by turn, British society, than just simply deposing the divine right of our monarch to rule, and putting us on the road to something resembling democracy.

The idea, perhaps somewhat over simply, was proposed that the civil war also impacted our national psychee. That Britain is divided in to Roundheads and Cavaliers. The first, dour, disapproving, thrifty, authoritarian, killjoys. The second, fun-loving, tolerant, generous, happy go lucky.

The point was made that this contrast was not a political, but rather a behavioural one. To reinforce the point, examples were given from across the political spectrum of Roundheads and Cavaliers making willing political bedfellows. Ann Widdicombe and Boris Johnson from the Conservative party. Worth noting though, Cavaliers from the Labour Party were a bit thin on the ground!

Darksyde, the observations I made were political rather than personal ones. Yes, I know you didn't write as if you hadn't taken my comments personally, it's my experience of political discussions though that people tend to make politics very personal.

I try to be impartial, though its probably fair to say that my stances on immigration, Islam, multi-culturalism, Europe, those French bastards, cultural Marxism, the ever expanding political class, would give me the appearance of being a paranoid right wing bigot, rather than a brainwashed left wing killjoy.

I've never voted, I am toying with the idea of registering and voting for the British National Party at the next Euro elections, but probably won't. I am staunchly a-political, I have an opinion, that is that they're all a bunch of useless, self-serving wankers, that pay lip service to the needs of the people that vote for them, whilst licking the arses of those they truly serve - their paymasters. I have been told in the past that my stance on voting means I am not entitled to an opinion, but the fact that a huge chunk of the fruits of my labour go towards feathering the nest of the political class, makes bollocks of that idea!

Anyway, Merry Christmas to you too. Less of the git, thank you very much.
