It has to be said that Texas and some other Southern states do have some support for breaking away from "The North". It's a historical thing going back to the end of the Civil War. Bottom line is a lot of them don't like being governed from the North and they don't trust the Government.
It's a lot more complicated than that, I'm just giving a basis overview.
