Pete, if you do do it, do some research on the lifts used at the same time. Obviously there will come a point where you're struggling to increase weight. The 5x5 framework is a good starting point, but isn't necessarily necessary as you improve your condition. Personally I keep a core of squats and deadlifts, and work around that with other strength and gymnastic movements.
