So, a beating that resulted in a 3 month stay in hospital, followed by having to leave Northern Ireland and never return, is a fitting punishment for say, protesting against fox hunting?

A knee capping for burgling the "wrong" house is just? That isn't justice, that is revenge.

In the late 1980s, living in London, I knew dozens of kids that had been run out of Belfast especially by the IRA. It certainly wasn't a case so much of what you did wrong, as who you had wronged. These were kids living in squats, or doorways, under bridges, subject to the worst that London could throw at them. I won't be too graphic, but London in the 1980s wasn't a pleasant place for stray children.
