Swine Flu- Do you have it?

I assume everyone knows what Swine Flu is by now. Some flu that killed a few people in Mexico, then a few people who travelled to Mexico. Someone who was dating a Mexican who had recently been back to Mexico died.

And now the papers are predicting that 1 in every family is going to die from Swine Flu.

I know you shouldn't laugh when people have died but these are the same papers that told me I was going to die to a killer disease called Bird Flu. Which I never caught.

So how many of you really are at risk of Swine Flu? I think its really wrong that the press make it seem like a national emergency when its something that is going on miles away and is very rare anyway. Earlier on I saw a government advert giving a free helpline if I'm worried about swine flu..

C'mon.. what a waste of money. Cancer kills millions, Swine Flu didn't even kill hundreds :(

In related news, Jade Goody has two books in this weeks ten best sellers....

sparks 05-02-2009 06:09 PM

I had pork chops and bacon for breakfest

does that count

FuckingRotter 05-02-2009 06:19 PM

Imagine if there was a free government helpline for people concerned aboutthe level of taxation....

Then we could all have tea

FuckingRotter 05-02-2009 06:31 PM

No, because the "free" helpline would cost, oh bugger it, never mind.

Damn what paper are you reading?

The thing that's scary about this is it is a virus that if it mutates (something that can happen with no notice)then it could easily become a pandemic and kill millions.

I totally agree that the Press has just taken this and blown it up.It is important and it needs to be watched closely but the way they are reporting it in the States has many many people freaked out. They are closing schools in many places. There is talks of closing the Mexican boarder.I live in a State that is on the boarder so it has been a big deal here.

I did not vote for any of these because there is not one i fit in.If there was a 4th choice that was,"Im concerned but im not freaking out ".I would have voted for that one.

another reason I like you mate

I agree with the bird flu analogy

Obviously to anyone who thinks, the media tends to blow these things way out of proportion...

Caution still needs to be used though. As always, its wait and see. Around my area last year there was a bad scare with mersa and the year before that it was spinal meningitis...

Mostly it is the school kids who are at risk for catching contagions first and spreading them quickly in the community...

I voted not too worried, but I'm still watching out.

FuckingRotter 05-02-2009 06:54 PM

I'm going to be serious for a minute. What concerns me most is the media feeding frenzy surrounding this. Diverts our attention away from other more pressing concerns, ie that any one of us may lose our livelihoods. Who cares if we're all going to die anyway?

Great news for governments who would prefer to be portrayed as being seen to be doing something, rather than having their ability to perform scrutinised.

snarkopo 05-02-2009 07:14 PM

As far as I'm concerned it's the same as the media hyping the bird flu, which was nothing, this is typical. It's about ratings which = $$$.

Lucy. 05-02-2009 07:45 PM

There was MRSA, SARS, then bird flu, then now swine flu. All were going to affect someone I knew, and yet none of them did.

In my personal opinion its disgusting setting up government helplines paid out of tax payers money (in a recession) for something that is just so far away and isn't really going to affect me or anyone I know, when there is real diseases out there killing millions.

I just agree with FR, its a ridiculous time (for britain anyway) to be worried about a small bug thats happening miles away and it diverts from real news.

Gordon Brown has apparently dedicated some time to speak about Swine Flu. Gordon Brown should forget all about it and spend all his time getting us out of the mess he put us in.

fival 05-02-2009 10:53 PM

as for the swine flu, if i get it and im aware death is pending ima go spit in allot of peoples faces i fuckin hate, and get fucking drunk

ChiTownHoney 05-03-2009 01:50 AM

its nothing to be worried about, it can be treated just like the regular flu.

A paper is actually predicting 1 in every family will die from it? Are you kidding?

The U.S media isnt even that stupid.

My point of view...

The swine flu isn't somethinng of new...probably some of you alreday know the same thing is happened in Cina.
For my personal point of view there are zero chances we'll have a "pandemia"...even if everything is always possible...
but for the moment...the number of victims is too low for get worried...with this i'm not saying that is just a joke...
we must be careful of course...but at the same time we have to stay calm...today the situation is still in under control. ;)
