The Zodiac Rapist 1972
Don't get too excited folks. The rape scene(s) are not very intense, but this film is still a classic, so some of you might have been looking for it.
The Zodiac Rapist 1972 Also Known As * Zodiac Killer Main Details * Color * Running Time: 63 Min. * Distribution Co: After Hours Cinema (USA) Cast and Crew * Starring: John Holmes, Andy Bellamy, Mycle Brandy, Sandy Dempsey, Eve Orlon * Produced by John Lamb In the Zodiac Rapist (1972) we find the young John Holmes as "The Zodiac," a rapist who is "terrorizing" women at random throughout greater Los Angeles. He's made a habit of sending letters and prank calls to private investigator, Sam Dobbs (uncredited), who swears to stop The Zodiac for good. Recruiting the help of a female detective, Dobbs sets a trap for the Zodiac where he is "raped" and arrested. An interesting opener to the films involves an unnamed Brunette enjoying some nude gardening in her back yard while "The Zodiac" leers from the treeline. Ironically, she's trimming a bush, and as we discover through the remainder of the scene; this is a skill reserved only for greenery! It's almost tongue in cheek--as if the 1970s knew what we'd be laughing about! OK, like any of this needed to be explained, the star of the show doesn't have a name--his owner is John Holmes. Unlike much of the early grindhouse hardcore from the early 1970s, The Zodiac Rapist is fairly well written. The Zodiac speaks mostly in rhyme and even quotes a variation of Shakespeare in the film's conclusion. Keep in mind, in 1972, many of those involved in hardcore pornography (actors, actresses, directors, and producers) envisioned that one day the their acts would find their way into mainstream Hollywood studios. Inside Deep Throat (2005) discusses this mindset in depth and, to some degree, actually validates many "films" from this era. To their credit, they were actually attempting to employ some craft into their work. Prior to the VHS revolution, practitioners actually had to have moderate technical skills to direct, produce, and distribute films. With this in mind, The Zodiac Rapist provides an example of these themes in several ways. Namely, the title, with its use of "Zodiac" and "Rapist" shines through as an example of sensationalizing these early films in an effort to draw bigger audiences. Deep Throat, which was released in the same year, would ultimately prove that nothing sold tickets at the box office more than controversy. As for the "Zodiac" reference, a mysterious group of murders had occurred in San Francisco in 1966 and the killer remains unidentified to date. By 1972, this case had reached national attention due to a series of coded letters sent to regional newspapers from the actual killer. Although The Zodiac Rapist is ultimately more lighthearted than its title suggests, the reference is an obvious attempt to capitalize on the sensational murders. The following year, films such as Forced Entry (1973) would go much further to employ violent sexual themes on screen. By the mid-1970s many audiences would trend away from hardcore porn altogether in exchange for more violent fodder such as in Snuff (1976) and Cannibal Holocaust (1980) among many others. Although hardcore porn never wavered, by the early 1980s it had started to move into the home video market. And with video, you lost much of the art that directors "attempted" to employ in the industry's earlier films. If you're into porn for the obvious reasons, you'll probably do better with the Internet. However, if you enjoy the social implications surrounding the porn explosion in the early 1970s and you appreciate the vision shared by the wealth of "uncredited" performers (due to constantly dodging regional vice squads), then you'll have a great time watching The Zodiac Rapist.
