Turns out Dixie may have been written by slaves that were sold to a farm in New York because their owner didn't have work for them all the year round.

Well, they may not have written it down. Then again, were all American slaves illiterate?

No, house slaves were taught to read and write. The more trusted ones were allowed to go to market and buy supplies for their masters. the slave owners realized the danger in that and tried to tightly control the ability to read and write, correctly understanding that knowledge was power.
