This is fucking hilarious!

An Argentinian navy submarine has gone missing in the South Atlantic, and the Argentine government has asked the British government for help finding it. Who would have thought it, Argies being glad to see the Royal Navy! :D

grants70 11-19-2017 01:58 PM

No doubt the British navy already has a presence in the area. :)

FuckingRotter 11-19-2017 02:47 PM

Well, of course. Which is why the Argies, who generally spend their time petitioning the United Nations to get the Royal Navy OUT of the area, came to us!

FuckingRotter 11-23-2017 12:17 PM

Running out of oxygen.

grants70 11-24-2017 04:46 AM

Running out of air, rumors of an explosion. It's not looking good.

FuckingRotter 11-24-2017 02:09 PM

Oh well. Shouldn’t be sneaking about in the South Atlantic any way.

tom8517 11-24-2017 06:11 PM

A little background, the sub was German built, commissioned in 1983. Non nuclear. Rumours already about shoddy maintenance practices.

FuckingRotter 11-29-2017 12:52 PM

Yes, well, Argentina blew most of their military budget for the next century back in 1982.

tom8517 11-29-2017 05:55 PM

If I remember right, the Argentine navy didn't fare very well. Their army was a disaster. Their air force did better, managed to sink a few British ships. Made the Exochet missile famous. The British Harrier was at a disadvantage, it was not designed as an air superiority fighter. Was offset to a large degree by the British pilots being much better trained.

FuckingRotter 11-29-2017 11:53 PM

Exocets, supplied by our supposed French allies!

Don't forget the big help the USA gave, pinpointing the location of Argentine navy and ground troops and passing that info to the British.

FuckingRotter 11-30-2017 11:49 AM

It's the fucking Falklands! You could fly over it in five minutes and know the name of every single sheep, and every human that ever fucked it. Next you'll be channelling that Texan idiot that used to hang about here and telling us how the USA liberated the Falklands single handed with one arm tied behind its back and nothing but a baseball bat for a weapon.

Wankers!

tom8517 11-30-2017 06:00 PM

As anyone who has been here for a while knows. I've no fondness for the British armed forces. That said, the Falklands was a British operation, start to finish. The US provided some minor logistical support as the fleet was in route to the Falklands, but nothing really significant.

FuckingRotter 12-01-2017 01:44 AM

The Argentinians have called off the search for the missing submarine.

grants70 12-01-2017 06:13 AM

For a while early on, it looked like there might be a nice ending to this. Heads may roll in Argentina once the bickering and finger-pointing gets started, if it hasn't already.

FuckingRotter 12-02-2017 02:27 PM

The US military did offer to help, but I suppose this had to be a solely British rescue mission.

The Falklands is what probably saved Margaret Thatcher from single term obscurity, and the United Kingdom from socialist hell. It would have been interesting to see how Michael Foot would deal with the Provis though.

When was the last time the USA won a war without help? Never?

Ok, but then nations going to war one on one is a thing of the past. The Falklands and the Iran/IRAQ war may be the last of them. The closest the US was the Pacific war in WII, minor UK and Anzac participation, mainly an American show.

The point is that any nation at war gets help from others. For instance nobody alone was going to beat the Germans in WW2, it was a combined effort that eventually outnumbered them in manpower/materials/weapons and crushed the fuckers.

I think China would be capable go it alone, at least against its neighbors in the territorial expansion efforts.
